when i was in college (www.hsu.edu) there was a class specifically on bookmaking. they did everything from modified to making and everything else you could possibly imagine. i think it was called book arts or something. i didn't take it but sort of regret that.

sorry to hear that.

But I think there are bookbinding courses available there in the USofA, right ?

Or,

you could teach yourself, like I did.

If I can do it, I am sure you can.

Its been hard trying to find journal fabrics that cater for men.

So I am planning to continue the black series.

Plain black but with genuine Irish waxed Linen thread 4 ply and #18 gauge.

I am thinking of plain black fabric covers but with the coloured stitches.

The flyleaves AND ribbon pagemarker will match the stitches.

Like so ...

Hi

Not been here for a while.

I know you have already stated somwehere on this thread, but the thread is now so huge I can't seem to find the answer now

What type of stitching do you use for the open spine journals?

Do you have a link to instructional somewhere?

Alternatively, I can Google the name of the stitching

What weight/thickness thread do you use for example on an A5 size journal?

Thanks. As always your journals never cease to impress, you have turned it into an art form

Regards

This is Journal #110 "Bathtub"

A5 in size.

I chanced upon this nicely illustrated card.

So i bought it without yet figuring how to use it to adorn a journal cover.

This was a tryout.

I decided to lay the card onto A5 greyboards like so

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2102.jpg

The design had to be a "bare-bones" design , ie , naked greyboards.

I decided to cut away and make a recess to receive the card.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2100.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2101.jpg

I decided also to leave a border around it rather than snugly, in order to cater for inaccuracy.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2105.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2104.jpg

It looked a bit plain like so ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2106.jpg

and so I decided to paint the border with acrylic blue paint.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2110.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2109.jpg

The painted 'drains' ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2112.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2113.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20110%20A5%20Bathtub/DSCF2135.jpg

The stitches were a problem, but I had the exact same hues of linen stitches as on the card ...

This was pure coincidence ... :P

The stitches worked fine...

Yellow stitches where there was yellow on the card ... and so on ...

I expect the bare-bones design to have inherent weaknesses , especially its edges where its exposed. Unless there is a way of sealing it.

This is Journal #113 "Postcards" made on order

For a long time I couldn't solve the problem of covering my ISO A-sized greyboard covers with only a single sheet of 12"x12" paper . The height of an A4 paper is 297mm. and 12inches is 304.8mm. hence the paper is never big enough to wraparound a pair of A5 coverboards.

This journal order , however, 'forced' me to revisit the problem and I finally found a solution.

Unlike Journal #111 "Lucky Lindy" , where the paper did not wrap around the edges of the coverboards,

I used other materials to make up for the shortfall in the cover paper in this journal.

Here in this journal , I used bookcloth.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20113%20A7%20Postcards/Journal%20113A%20A5%20Postcards/P1040562.jpg

The bookcloth was used sparingly - just enough to allow the paper to wrap around the edges of the coverboards, to allow as much of the graphics to be retained.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20113%20A7%20Postcards/Journal%20113A%20A5%20Postcards/P1040559.jpg

The bookcloth was only applied onto the front cover, again to preserve as much graphics as possible.

No doubt, the bookcloth interrupts the graphics in that you don't see a continuation of the graphics from front to back seamlessly which I often do in all my journals. In this sense, the choice of the 'interruption' becomes important. If its too strong, it will compete for attention from the covers. It has to be something subtle , yet not out of place. I chose a khaki bookcloth becos of the predominant beige hues on the covers.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20113%20A7%20Postcards/Journal%20113A%20A5%20Postcards/P1040561.jpg

The remaining paper was used to craft another mini sized A7 sized version.

Again using bookcloth, since the leftover paper was very little.

I am very pleased with this method, becos it yields zero (well, almost) wastage !

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20113%20A7%20Postcards/Journal%20113A%20A5%20Postcards/DSCF2437.jpg

In employing the same technique above, I tried it on this time on 2 sheets of a given paper design.

Bcos of the way the paper was maximised, I was able to produce a set of four journals instead of the usual 3 that I have been doing so far. :clap1:

This is Journal #112 "Atlantique" - a quadruplet of four different sized journals ... made on order ...

With one sheet of paper, I was able to produce one A5 and one A7.

But with two sheets I was able to achieve not only this pair, but two additional A6 sized journals - one in landscaped format.

Here is the mini version - Journal #112 "Atlantique in A7 size.

Pictured with the very elegant OMAS MoMA in HT trim. A pen I like so much for its elegant simplicity.

The leftover paper was too narrow and therefore bookcloth was used to make up for the shortfall.

I chose the SAIFU Olive Drab bookcloth - something more subdued - bcos the cover graphics were already very striking.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20112%20A7%20Atlantique/DSCF8077.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20112%20A7%20Atlantique/DSCF8079.jpg

The last one in this quartet is Journal #112B "Atlantique" - A6 but landscaped format.

Somehow, I find this one most aesthetically pleasing.

The "MB Hemmingway" inspired set ....

The perfect accoutrement for a MB Hemmingway ...

(... but I don't have one ... :crybaby: )

It started out as an attempt to resume further development on the black series of journals.

This is Journal #92A "Basic Black"

Front

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092A%20Basic%20Black/DSCF2445.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092A%20Basic%20Black/DSCF2447.jpg

Orange was used as the accent colour.

These are waxed linen cords 4-ply and #18 gauge.

The flyleaves and ribbon pagemarker were selected for their hue - to be similar to the Orange Crush hue of the cords.

Then I realized that the Black / Orange combo was strikingly similar to the hues on the MontBlanc Hemmingway FP.

I proceeded to look for an appropriate orange fabric to craft another matching journal to this black one.

And this was created ...

Black cords were used.

As were black flyleaves.

I just want to say that the Lucky Lindy set is even more beautiful in person than it is in photographs. A couple of fellow journalers hovered around my cube at work last month when they arrived and I opened the package. There were oohs and ahs all around. cloud9.gif

Atlantique is a beautiful set, especially with the choice of endpapers. Congratulations on finding a solution to the "wraparound edge" problem! I think both ways make for a nice look. BTW, if I didn't feel that Atlantique would be more suited to a travel journal of sorts, that would have been my 2nd choice of designs. ;)

You're a wonderful craftsman, TMLee, and I feel privileged to own some of your fine artwork in which to write. I hope my words do your books justice.

Very nice! I'm very impressed. How long did that take you? I'll bet it's neat being able to write in a notebook you made yourself.

Need a pen repaired or a nib re-ground? I'd love to help you out.

dear souldrifter,

thank you for kind words. It is encouraging. :cloud9:

I figured that much about why you skipped Atlantique. It's a strong theme due to the stunning graphics.

Yes the wraparound solution is a great help.

If only I had letter sized paper here where I live, then it would be perfect !

Becos the A6 landscape version would be able to fit in nicely.

A bit hard to describe in words.

Lettersized paper folded in half is shorter than A5.

Leaving that crucial little more behind to yield A6L covers that are fully wrapped around.

Hope the journals will serve you well. :)

Kind rgds

thank you '777',

it takes about 3 hours fastest cumulative time.

In reality it's slower and more deliberate.

The 3 hours do not include 2 separate occasions of clamping overnight as glue-drying time for the covers and the bookblock.

Others have other techniques to save time. Mine is more like due to lack of proper eqpt.

Bcos it takes that much of unhurried time, I ensure that each journal or set is carefully designed in order to avoid producing an unsatisfactory outcome.

Ironically, I haven't started using my own designs as I still have a few (assorted brands) journals waiting to be filled.

Most of my creations are gifted away.

Even more have been sold. Including my best and favourite creations. :)

That's the funny thing about craftwork.

cheers
