This is an idea from a long time ago.

A sketch idea in my journal just waiting to see fruition.

Finally found the opportunity (and the drive) to execute it.

Its a "Bare Bones" journal - the first one being the Dos-a-Dos posted some time back.

This one has the idea of doing some 'cut-outs' on the naked greyboard covers.

I had in mind a name carved out along the spine edge.

Here's the freehand pencil drawing on the greyboard covers.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057A%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20Timothy/DSCF6422.jpg

The alphabets were then carefully cut out.

and the top layer peeled away.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057A%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20Timothy/DSCF6424.jpg

All peeled away

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057A%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20Timothy/DSCF6433.jpg

This idea shows the potential for many possible variations and possibilities.

One can do alot to personalize a journal that has such 'naked' covers.

You could draw in and colour your own logo or emblem.

Or a simple monogram.

Or you could make a series and mark your journals accordingly to identify that its belonging to a same series or theme. On the shelf, it'll look neat and organised, easily identifiable.

You could also identify them by the same colour ribbon pagemarker. :)

This is Journal #57A "Bare Bones - Timothy"

I decided to add colour to accentuate the recessed alphabets.

As mentioned earlier , the recesses were laid with PVA white glue to seal the surfaces and to prepare it to receive paint.

So the alphabets were painted with kid's acrylic poster colour.

My daughter couldn't resist the challenge to test her painting skills ....

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057A%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20Timothy/DSCF6434.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057A%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20Timothy/DSCF6438.jpg

Completed.

I decided on a dark yellow ochre bcos I had waxed linen thread of that exact hue .

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057A%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20Timothy/DSCF6436.jpg

The tricky part before this was trying to figure out how to incorporate the stitches onto the covers without causing a distracting disruption to the cut-out name.

Eventually I settled on placing the stitches on the yellow painted parts. And also decided to use stitches of a same hue to camouflage the cords.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057A%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20Timothy/DSCF2035.jpg

The alphabets added up to a total of 4 pairs of sewing stations.

Conveniently, the middle letter 'O' was left undisturbed bcos the practical problem was the difficulty of placing the sewing stations on it.

I was pleased with the end result.

Bcos if you look at the stitches, they flow and continue from the cut-in-half alphabets.

It was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. :clap1:

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057A%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20Timothy/DSCF2022.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057A%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20Timothy/DSCF2024.jpg

It was harrowing trying to sew 4 pairs of stations at one go.

The challenge of handling 8 needles in tandem was made more difficult bcos the stations were near each other.

This caused the cords to tangle easily , even though they were well waxed and genuine linen threads.

The waxed linen threads are 4 ply and #18 gauge for those interested.

Unlike my usual flat cords, these are round in section as you can see. They can't be flattened easily by clamping.

The other unexpected but pleasant surprise was that the cords sat within the alphabet recesses , :D unike my usual journals where the stitches are raised from the surface of the covers.

This one is completely flush with no protrusions.

Crafting another trio of journals ...

The paper is printed double-sided and carries very nice designs.

This one is on road signs.

The topside is green with road signs,

The reverse is a nice chocolate brown with the outlines of cars.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20108%20Highways%20and%20Byways/Journal%20108B%20A5%20Highways%20and%20Byways/DSCF6323.jpg

I figured it would be a waste not to use the reverse side.

So I decided to create a spine border.

Here its glued onto the coverboards.

This shows the reverse side of the paper which I decided to use to line the spine edge.

Its chocolate brown in colour bearing the print of the outlines of cars.

The natural coloured stitches matched the beige outlines of the cars.

The ribbon was also selected to be a dark brown to complement the browns.

This is the A5 large one in the trio

Journal #108B (A5 size) "Highways & Byways"

I decided to use a 2-tone theme for the stitchcords.

Both brown and natural was well-suited to the colours on the prints.

This is Journal #57B "Bare Bones - LeCorbu" made on commission.

The Bare Bones design is proving itself to be rather versatile, in terms of offering personalised designs and even more personalisation after it reaches the user , if he/she so wishes ...

The only problem thats not resolved yet is the edges of the greyboard.

They don't take too kindly to moisture damage. They will expand and deform.

I haven't resolved this.

Seal the edges with PVA?

Front with and without the bands deployed.

Pictured with an MB149 for scale

I kept the colours to a minimum.

Black was used as accent.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057B%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20LeCorbu/DSCF2125.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057B%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20LeCorbu/DSCF2123.jpg

The flyleaves and flap and pocket were also black. Ribbon too ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2057%20Bare%20Bones%20Dos-a-Dos/Journal%2057B%20Bare%20Bones%20-%20LeCorbu/DSCF2126.jpg

It was only after completing the journal that I thought of personalising the journal.

The graphics were drawn in such a way that 'sat' on the band when the band is deployed.

I felt that drawing the entire name was unnecessary. Half drawn in was legible enuf ...

In fact, one could also colour in the cover below the band

The ink testpage.

The paper in this journal is sugarcane bagasse paper (sustainable and 'green') , white , 80gsm from "Until Utopia".

I was impressed with how it could take ink despite its 80g grammage.

No bleedthru on the reverse side. Yes you can see the shadow on the reverse page but only bcos I used dark ink.

This is a first time that bagasse paper is used.

Bcos the paper is thin, it meant that I was able to put more sheets in the usual thickness. So here it is 7 signatures but 5 folios each, yielding 140 writing pages total.

The Sprit of St Louis ....

This one is on commission - sort of ....

The graphics are stunning , and the visual composition is just so right :cloud9:

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2165.jpg

The problem was that the paper was not big enough to permit me to foldover or wrap over the edges of the greyboards covers which are in ISO A5 sizes.

The real problem was that there was only ONE of this sheet left remaining in the store. I usually need 2 sheets to craft 3 journals.

But it was too nice to give it a miss , and I bought it without hesitation.

In addition, the graphics were too beautiful to lose to the foldovers as they are glued.

I could see and understand the need to preserve the graphics more than the buyer (though she felt the same way) bcos I had the sheet of paper and could fully appreciate the opportunity at hand.

After a while of experimenting and dry-runs, I was convinced there was no way to preserve the graphics.

I had to change , or adopt a new technique of wrapping the covers.

The paper was also printed double-sided.

And it was equally attractive.

I fashioned an 'L' plate out of unused greyboards to create a straightedge to align the paper and boards for what I am going to do next.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2172.jpg

The paper was overturned and pushed against the newly made straightedge.

Then the coverboards were carefully glued and positioned onto this wrong side.

The boards were pushed against the DIY straightedge and centred as much as possible on the paper.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2173.jpg

After giving a good press, the paper was then cut as accurately as possible from the coverboards.

This would form the final finished product.

Hence the need to be as accurate and square as possible in all the right angles.

After cutting, the 'right' side

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2174.jpg

A closeup

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2179.jpg

The covers - front - topside.

The entire graphic (almost) was intact.

More imptly, no part of the graphic was lost , especially at the spine.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2177.jpg

Next came the problem of how to treat the bare edges of the coverboards.

I decided to seal the edges with PVA.

I taped the rightside to protect from glue damage, using a high quality masking tape commonly used for modelling plastic kits.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2191.jpg

Then I proceeded to apply the glue on the edges...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2192.jpg

The tape was quickly removed whilst the glue was still wet. PVA is very strong when dried and so this had to be done wet otherwise the dried glue will just rip off the cover paper.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2193.jpg

This is a pic showing the glue still wet - white in colour

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2194.jpg

After drying, the edges still looked bare and 'unfinished', altho they are now sealed and intact and won't split open so easily.

That was when I decided to go ahead to paint the edges with acrylic paint.

Acrylic paint is used bcos its impervious to water when completely dried.

I chose blue to keep the number of hues to a minimum so as to avoid being too distracting.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2201.jpg

The finished , painted covers

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2206.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2205.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2204.jpg

The remaining bottom part was likewise glued onto greyboards to form the other journal.

It had to be landscaped in format.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2207.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2197.jpg

So in essence, the entire sheet of graphics was preserved like so ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2209.jpg

I have decided to christen this journal/s #111 "Lucky Lindy"

This is an untested technique of covering the coverboards.

What I am wary about is the unprotected / exposed edges of the paper and the greyboards.

I treated this with PVA in an effort to 'seal' them from fraying open.

It remains to be tested if it does work.

But I had no choice, the graphics were too beautiful to lay to waste.

The next part is deciding on the colour of the flyleaves to bring the entire journal to a co-ordinated whole, aesthetically .

This is a nice one.

I wish I had one myself. :crybaby:

OK ... this is my 2nd handmade book and my 1st attempt at a coptic stitch. Following the link showing how to do the coptic stitch.

I tried out only 3 signatures first. Each one 20 pages.

<img src="http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%202/copticstitch3signatures.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Opened. I used Conqueror paper. Vellum. Cream colored. 90g/sqm. Folded into A6 size. The stitch allows it to stay flat open.

<img src="http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%202/copticstitchopened.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I folded teh extra paper over the edges.

<img src="http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%202/insidecovers.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Overall view. I like the distressed effect of the paper.

<img src="http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%202/outsideview.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I presented it to my son . I hope he uses it and don't keep it empty for that wd be a waste.

I plan to do a 5 or 6 signature book, now that I have more confidence. Only thing I am still unclear how to do the cover.

Hey TMlee, is that pen in the picture Omas?

This is Journal #111A "Lucky Lindy" just completed.

Its an odd size but near A6 landscaped format.

I had to trim paper to fit the covers. Wastage which I don't like.

The length is A6 but the height is about 1cm shorter than A6.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/Journal%20111A%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2217.jpg

As posted above, this journal #111 is a prototype of sorts. The edges are exposed.

Front

Pictured with a black Esterbrook J with an exquisite  Pendleton point.

I am not sure if the Estie and Spirit of St Louis are around the same era. I just figured they are close. Two iconic symbols of that time.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/Journal%20111A%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2222.jpg

I was deliberating over what colour stitch cords to use.

I brought out my (limited) range of Irish Waxed Linen cords. 4 ply and #18 gauge.

I like the hues. They are very very pleasant.

All of these 4 hues could work equally well bcos of the traces of hues on the graphics themselves.

They ought to complement well, or so I thought.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20111%20A5%20Lucky%20Lindy/Journal%20111A%20Lucky%20Lindy/DSCF2219.jpg

I finally decided against using them bcos I realized the cords would compete for attention from the already beautiful graphics of the covers.

I reverted to the natural coloured heavy waxed cords I usually use.

And I believe its right.

The natural hue of the cords remain in the background as the eye is drawn to the graphics and composition.

Yet, when examined up close, the stitches convey a charm of their own. :)

Next was choosing the right coloured flyleaves.

I decided on a blood red. (I haven't decided for the other A5 sized journal yet)

There were many many shades of red available. But this one stood out.

It had this pinstripe motif which can be likened to that chic pinstriped designs of that time. (imagine well dressed gangsters ? :hmm1: )
