I kept the stitches white so as to match the white elastic band and as well as to not overpower the graphics on the cover

This is Journal #98 "SHINWAZOME CHIYOGAMI - Pink Flowers"

I revisited using these Japanese paper.

And I realized that this is actually very special Japanese paper, just one sample of many kinds of Japanese paper.

This one is labelled as SHINWAZOME CHIYOGAMI paper.

The outlines of the flowers and such are white and raised. They seem to be latex.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2098%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20-%20Pink%20Flowers/DSCF7137.jpg

I am unable to find out exactly how they make this kind of paper.

Anyway, for bookbinding, this paper is just FABULOUS !!!! The paper is extremely easy to work with. It folds over very well.

It glues very well. It doesn't warp when wet with glue. And it can be compressed real flat. Its like cloth, but it doesn't stretch out of shape like cloth.

Amazing paper. No wonder its not cheap !!!

The earlier journal using this paper was Journal #12.

The stitches had to be white !!! (to match the white graphics)

This is Journal #100 "SHINWAZOME CHIYOGAMI - Gold Ochre"

Yay ... ! :clap1: my 100th design ! :D

Another example of a return to old materials but rendered with acquired skills to date.

This cover material is the same as that used on Journal #7 which was a hardback design. The graphics are very nice and it makes a handsome journal cover.

Here done in an exposed stitch design ....

Front. Pictured with a 'grappa 1930 Green Marble for scale. Its ochre celluloid matches the ochre of the covers :P

This is Journal #101 "SHINWAZOME CHIYOGAMI - Maple Leaves"

It is Japanese paper done in the same technique.

The graphics are beautiful.

They look like maple leaves floating down a stream.

This paper ( a big sheet) is different from the usual offerings. It has less colours.

And the colours are also muted.

I understand that the Japanese like their hues strong and bright - never 'pastel' in that sense. So when I saw this, it caught my eye because it stood out and it stood out different from the rest.

The Front

I decided on white stitches to blend in with the elastic band , ribbon

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%20101%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20%20Maple%20Leaves/DSCF7175.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%20101%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20%20Maple%20Leaves/DSCF7174.jpg

The flyleaves were chosen becos of the proximity of its hue to the similar rust orange on the cover design

This is Journal #78C (A5 size) "Gaudi - Pedrera"

This is one of a pair of an A5 version made on commission.

Of course pictured with the Etruria Pedrera for scale.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%2078C%20A5%20Gaudi%20Pedrera/DSCF7184.jpg

Because of the larger dimensions, I was able to feature the full elevation on the covers.

Unlike the previous A6 versions, there are no missing parts of the elevation especially where the spine was.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%2078C%20A5%20Gaudi%20Pedrera/DSCF7190.jpg

The full elevation is also featured inside the journal on the 6th signature.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%2078C%20A5%20Gaudi%20Pedrera/DSCF7196.jpg

And the write up is featured on the 2nd signature

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%2078C%20A5%20Gaudi%20Pedrera/DSCF7195.jpg

White stitches are a must for this white series of journals.

The white theme is carried throughout the covers ; flyleaves ; stitches ; bands

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%2078C%20A5%20Gaudi%20Pedrera/DSCF7187.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%2078C%20A5%20Gaudi%20Pedrera/DSCF7188.jpg

and the rear flyleaf

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/journal%2078C%20A5%20Gaudi%20Pedrera/DSCF7197.jpg

I used a different elastic band. Something flatter in profile. Its claimed to be a better quality longer-lasting elastic.

This is Journal #91B (A7 - mini size) "Paris Market"

The third and last in the "Paris Market" design.

Its A7 in size - mini .

Almost credit card size.

Pictured with the classy looking OMAS MoMA.

Only 2 sewing stations are needed due to its small size.

It doesn't have a namecard slot however... too small ...

Dear Aristarco,

I envy you...

what cutting machine is that? great help in efficiency.

multi-piercing rig ? wow ! Good idea.

I am imagining what it looks like.

But the coptic stitch(i presume) is done book by book ?

The planner pages look well done. (and i can't seem to post emoticons ...)

Best wishes on your next project...

I've been trying for months to upload a pic of the rig, the trimmer and the new reporter style blocks but it seems this site is no longer working on the file uploads.

Yes, the coptic stitch is done book by book, contributing exponentially to my carpal tunnel syndrome and rendering me crippled and unable to take a cup of coffee 'cause I can't lift the cup from the table.

No kidding. My doctor and family are angry about it but I love binding. What can I do?

The rig is just a small craddle to put the signature open and a "comb" made with a piece of binding board and 5 needles. I put the signature, push with the comb and get 5 holes in a single stroke.

The trimmer is a small version of the trimmers (or guillotines) they use at print shops. Can cut thru 400 sheets of 70gsm paper (although it's better never to force it beyond 300) by pulling an arm. It costed me 5 times less than the german-made one I wanted to buy and it shows: the paper clamp (that presses the paper to trim) is lowered by a screw mechanism that's about to crack. Some solders are about to give up and the trimmer is just 6 months old. But in the meantime, I'm using it as much as I can before it becomes a piece of junk.

I'll upload pics to another site and send you the links. A pic's worth a thousand words, a hundred excels and a dozen powerpoints.

Greetings!

Tks aristarco for the pics. The eqpt looks nifty.

But seriously, I think you should take care of your CTS condition. It sounds serious to me at least.

So the 'piercing comb' operates to pierce one folio at a time?

It pierces a signature of up to 32 pages, depending on paper weight. With Fabriano Rosapina Watercolour paper, it can only pierce a signature of 8 pages (two sheets), whereas with normal copier paper (60-70gsm) it can go thru 6 sheets. I'm planning to reproduce the craddle and comb using wood instead of binders board. I'm looking forward to vacations!!
