This is Journal #90 "Music II" which is similar to Journal #39 "Music"

The graphics are the same except the background here is beige rather than white.

I decided on a 2-tone stitch - using Natural and dark Brown - to match the beige and darker brown hues on the fabric.

Matching black ribbon and flyleaves ...

A marked improvement from the #39 only bcos of the newer techniques and features and reducing the number of hues used.

This is Journal #24A "Red Flowers" - a revisit of an old but very nice cover design...

This time I tried varying the aesthetics by the use of co-ordinating colours, instead of emphasizing the exposed stitches.

So here you see the use of blacks to complement the blacks found on the fabric.

another from the Japanese series ...

This is Journal #81 "Owls"

I suppose all these animals , just like the Dragonfly, carry meanings for the Japanese.

Perhaps someone here can enlighten us ...

with a Japanese FP in the form of Danitrio as well ...

BTW, is there linen cords thicker than #18 ?

I just feel they could be thicker for what I am doing.

:D

My searching led me to Talas, who have a plethora of items. The link there will show you white bookbinding thread in 12, 18, 35 and 60 weights (by the way can anyone tell me what these numbers measure?). They also have other colours in the thicker weights as well. They have a site to drool at and prices that are excellent for online, though shipping may get you (or not). Nice to see what the 18 weight looks like, I bought a 12 weight spool. My test run looks and feels good. In a couple of days I'll make my full first attempt. Thanks for the inspiration TMLee.

Thanks Rick,

I lost the weblink to one site that gave a chart of thread sizes.

Anyway, #18/4 gauge is approx. between 0,8mm to 0,9mm , if I remember correctly.

So, my guesstimate is that your size #12 thread should be thicker.

It would be good if you can show some pics of your thread or the completed journal for us to approximate the size.

Bests

As mentioned, I wanted to start a plain black series of journals , like the white series.

So this is Journal #92 "Basic Black"

Its a black fabric that is not 100% cotton. Its a 65% to 35% composition of what I am really not sure.

But the end result is rather pleasant. Almost similar to bookcloth.

Pictures with one of my favourites - the OMAS MoMA in HT trim.

The plain black is elegant and (I think) accentuated by the more elegant MoMA , plain but not dull. B)

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/DSCF6930_1.jpg

In short its black upon black on black ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/DSCF6932_1.jpg

On my computer screen, this is pic that has the most accurate colour rendition of the journal.

The other pics are a little off.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/DSCF6933_1.jpg

The stitches are black, and so is the ribbon pagemarker and flyleaves ...

and the elastic band closure...

This is Journal #93 "Seasons"

Just like #91 "Paris Market" , its designed as a trio , in sizes A5 , A6 and A7mini.

The A7 mini is not shown here.

That is a neat journal. This got me an idea...but I don't know how it will wear in the long term.

How about using newspaper cover stories, things like special events or occasions. You can Xerox them on high quality paper so you would have a special edition journal. Just a thought.

cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

I came home from work yesterday to find a slip left by the mailman that I had missed a delivery. Went to the PO first thing this morning to retrieve my package and opened it in the lobby to find the #48D Leica R7 journal that TMLee made for me. Words can not express my feelings about this book. As many have said, it is so beautiful that I am afraid to use it.

There are some truly gifted craftsmen in the FPN community!

This is Journal #95 "Sap Green Bookcloth"

Its a bookcloth from of old, from the same batch as the Cobalt Blue bookcloth at that time.

This is Journal #96 "Signatures"

Its actually wrapping paper featuring the signatures of all the famous artists of the world.

I thought it might make a wonderful cover for a journal.

Here you see Vincent's signature on the front cover ....

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2096%20Signatures/DSCF7086.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2096%20Signatures/DSCF7087.jpg

The signatures are all brown in colour (or sepia if you like) ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2096%20Signatures/DSCF7091.jpg

and so I decided on brown flyleaves with a matching brown ribbon pagemarker ...
