Present test ink Noodler's 54th Massachusetts with cool gray-blue color. Ink writes great! The real pleasure of writing. Also color my type. Worse with the smell. It reminds some laboratory chemicals. Sharp and unpleasant. But nobody tells us to smell the ink. Note: TOTAL waterproof. I would recommend!

Where you using a specially dry pen?... This ink is very saturated to the point that is called a Blue-Black.

At least in my pens (wet flowing) it comes across as a deep Blue-Black with some teal undertone.

I love this ink and was devastated when I accidentally turned half a bottle to jelly by exposing it to trace amounts of vinegar. I had cleaned a mouldy pen and after what I thought was a good flushing filled it with 54th.

I left the bottle to sit for a few months and now the ink is again usable. It had a lot of sludge at the bottom of the bottle so I decanted off the good ink, which I will now only use with a dip pen.

The interesting thing is that it is still very waterproof but it is more blue than blue black and no hint of grey.

Please call me Nathan. It is a pleasure to meet you.

The original sample I tried of 54th MA was a teal-toned blue black. When I got a full bottle, however, it was a fair amount bluer -- relatively close to what the scans in the review show. Even the sample wasn't as dark as what you describe, though.

OTOH, it is one of the inks that I trust implicitly for addressing envelopes and signing checks. I didn't think I'd like the color, but I found it growing on me more and more as I used it. And no, I DON"T mean as in the "What color are your fingers today?" thread....

It's a great ink and one of the few I've bought from the Goulets. Nice characteristics but I confess I don't use it as much as I ought to...!

The scans in this review are pretty close to the colour I get when I use a finer nib, and/or a pen with lower ink flow. It does produce a richer, darker hue on the page if you use a wetter pen - at least in my experience! A really nice ink (apart from the smell) - but it's been bumped from my regular rotation, at least for the moment, by a couple of other blue-blacks...

I don't have this ink but to my mind it is very close to Noodler's Q'ternity, which is my favourite BB for the moment.

Q'ternity appears to me darker, but shading is almost the same, 54th is like a non-FD version of it, .. interesting.

Hello,

I have two bottles of 54th massachusetts, and both inks are different !

I bought these two bottles to Goulet, has one year of interval.

The bottles were shaken before the test.

First batch: dark gray green-blue, light smell, controlled flow.

Second batch: dark blue (grey), strong chemical smell, more fluid than the first

What happened? Use of another colouring agent ?

I like better the first batch, because it looks like a blue-black who would have aged for a long time

When did you buy these bottles? I bought a bottle a few weeks ago and like Cyber mentioned, mine is definitely highly saturated, so much so that the colour is practically just black to my eyes.

Which kinda sucks since I already have Noodler's Black and X-Feather...

Just dilute a little..... you get more ink and you get shading too... win-win.. ;)

The first bottle (ink blue grey (green)) in 2013.

The second in 2014 ( dark blue ink).

I recently bought my second bottle of this ink, and a very similar experience to yours. First bottle (now, used up) was dark, grayish, and dry, almost chalky. The new bottle, much lighter and more blue, wetter. I am happy with the improved flow, disappointed with the new color.

I have a bottle of 54th Massachusetts, bought recently. I've only taken a fill or two out of it. It is the grey-green version, not the blue-grey. I prefer the blue-grey instead and would be willing to trade for mostly full bottle of the blue-grey version.

I like it! I wish I knew if I'd get a dry or wet bottle. I hope it was a permanent improvement!

Thread revival ! Just got a bottle and for me the best quality is the dry time. Under 5 seconds, usually 3 on most non-fancy common office type papers I'm using. And absolutely no color 'lift off' or smearing with standing water on the text or rubbing wet text with fingers. As bullet-proof as Noodler's Black, but it's not black. :-) Bleeds through most of my papers but I do use med. nibs and the benefits outweigh this negative.
