How Many Pens Do You Own?

Recommended Posts

After a quick count, I think I am at 27 (forgot about an extra M800 demo still in the box). I am trying to hold below 30. Unfortunately, after my last 149 (90th anniversary) with a medium nib, I am starting to want maybe a BB or OBB 149. I have been getting extra nibs for pens that I can easily change. Currently fighting the urge for a factory stub for my HS and a broad CI for the m800 demo that does get used. Or, I could add a few bucks and get another 149 ;-)

I have about 38 pens. Of those, the majority are vintage or Chinese, and fourteen of them work perfectly— at least, up to my standards. I'm carrying six of the working ones with me right now, plus four that almost work but have minor issues. I've got two coming in the mail to bring it up to about 40 pens, after which I'll be taking a long break from any new pens.

hmm. Now where have I heard that before? Oh wait, isn't that what I tell myself every time I buy a new pen? :D Strangely I find that my rate of pen acquisition increases due to long awaited pens becoming available whenever I make one of these promises. So I have decided to just submit myself to the FP Gods and flow with the tide. :P

I usually do that, but this time I told my fiancée, so it's for real.

Of course, the night I told her, I discovered that Anderson Pens is located the next town over from me. I'm planning to stop in tomorrow morning to shop for ink and repair parts. Time to focus on getting my less-than-functional pens up to spec, and try out some new inks.

Not enough according to me, too much according to my wife.

Nice try though! :D I'm sure I'll get a lot of similar help from people here. :lticaptd:

I got some ink this morning (My first Noodler's!), nibs, micromesh, pretty much everything except actual pens. I hadn't realized one could get Parker Vector for $5... so I definitely can relate to pens becoming more available!

I really admire the people on this thread who can limit themselves to under ten pens and use all of them. It means that they know how to find what works for them and how to get rid of what doesn't. Of my forty-ish pens, I only actually use fifteen or sixteen. The rest need some kind of work to get to the "daily writer" stage. So I'm trying to shift from a collector to a user mentality, and start repairing and writing more.

@rez

Its the accumulating/collecting/hoarding bug that gets us.

In college I only had a few pens, and that was it. When you are 'funds limited' you learn to stop accumulating, so you have $ to buy lunch.

The next bug that will get you is the ink bug.

"Gee that color looks cool."

But ink is cheaper than pens.

@ac12: I'm into Chinese pens, though, so a bottle of ink is more expensive than most of my pens. I think it is catching, though. I bought a bottle of Black Swan in Australian Roses today and a sample of R&K Königsblau. I'm in my last semester so I'm trying to think beyond the current intensive notetaking. Always remembering, of course, to save some $ for lunch. "Funds limited" is right... that's why I have so many Chinese pens and vintage third-tier lever-fillers. :P

I have 55 pens now. All of them write well - ofcourse I like some more than the other. I use all through a random rotation process. So I call myself a user as well :D . Desperately trying to not call myself a colllector but not sure how long I can keep that up.

I think it's either 30 or 32. I had everything accounted for not long ago, but I seem to have lost track with the recent additions.

Where in WI are you?

I just knew that someone would want the job if I said that.

20 miles east of Janesville.

36, with only 2 costing more then $30 (at least before I swapped nibs). It took me far to long to figure out that I like a very fine nib with a very fat section. A Noodler's Ahab, Jinhao 159, or Airmail/Wality 71J[T] is a good size, but only the Airmail/Wality will come with a sufficiently fine nib. So I have been trying nibs...

6 pens have arrived this week, and I'm trying to pace myself and give each one some individual attention. Mostly they were cheap eBay pens shipped from China or India. The unpredictable shipping time lends a delicious degree of anticipation I don't get with more reliable trackable domestic shipping.

Also, 9 came in a 9 pack of Hero 616 Doctors. I'm currently plotting what to do with those.

You had me at "would pay with FP." :D Unfortunately, that's a bit too much of a drive from Oshkosh, so you'll have to find someone else on more of a "have pens, will travel" basis. :lticaptd:

I just found out about them this week, actually. I had a lovely visit yesterday morning, and bought some nibs, ink, and misc pen repair stuff. :happycloud9:

They were busy unpacking from the LA pen show, but they were happy to stop and talk and pull out everything for me to look at. I'll have to come back when they've got their pens all back in the cases. In the meantime, I'm filling my cart with ink samples. I think I've found my new favorite store. :vbg:

The shop is nice. I'll have to get up that way again this summer.
