How Many Pens Do You Own?

I own about 22 pens (I'm not entirely sure if I have more coming in the mail as I forget!). Most of my pens are modern Conway Stewarts. About 5 years ago in university I would not have imagined owning this many high-quality pens. Patience, a bit of effort and tons of luck certainly helped me build this collection.

26 now. The new Sailor 1911S Wicked Witch of the West, which I acquired a few weeks ago, is the only pen I've bought for myself in about two years, but my daughter returned the Pilot Metropolitan I'd given her as a gift, so I have two more pens than I did two years ago.

 

I use about 20 of the pens on a regular basis. The others are mainly to lend to people interested in discovering pens for themselves; when my granddaughter is old enough, I will let her play with them.

I am similarly keeping two pens always inked--a vintage Parker and a modern Sailor--and otherwise rotate, but with only one pen in rotation at a time.

Not much worth mentioning... however they are dear to me like anything... can't think of ever parting with them...

15 pens (Shaeffer, Montblanc, Pelikan, Pilot, Parker, Platinum, Kanilea, Sailor, Nakaya, Namiki, Hakase)

2 pens due next month

2 pens due next year

1 pen might be due short/longer term pending stock/production at Namiki

2 pens firmly planned but for longer term

2 pens loosely planned

2 pens to be seen irl first

 

That would bring the total to 26, but for one pen due next year I will sell another, so I arrive at 25, and that is still one too many as I would really like to try to keep my collection at 24 (the capacity of my collection box), so I have a dilemma to solve.

I own only one pen. Sad to say, but all the other pens in the collection own me.... I tried to fight them, but they are many and very powerful so I gave up and accepted their dominance.

I was really good yesterday. I went antiquing in eastern Ohio and managed to not succumb to the lures of three Esterbrooks, a Parker 45 desk pen set, and an Epenco.

The 45 set was the easiest -- I don't really do desk pens, and while the set was nice (and the FP had the squeeze filler in it), with a date calendar roll in the base, the price was more than I wanted to pay at the time (especially for Yet Another™ black 45). Two of the Esties were J series pens, but had nibs that I either already had or didn't interest me; the third was a later model c/c pen with a nib marked "FINE" and I didn't know what converter(s) it would take, so I passed even though it was only six bucks. The Epenco looked to be in decent shape (no obvious discoloration), but I don't know enough about the brand to know what a good price should be -- especially if it turned out to need a sac replacement.

I rewarded my fiscal virtue for a half-scoop waffle cone of Moose Tracks ice cream on the way home....

The real secret is to avoid pens made in a large variety of colors. Then that whole "collect 'em all" instinct has a natural limit.

I just counted my pens today and felt so guilty about the number of pens I owned. Resolved to sell some. As of this morning, with the ones in order, it has reached 40.
