Yeah, kind of miss it now (I cleaned out the pen it was in, in anticipation of getting a replacement nib soon). I'll put it in the next one that runs out.

It (Paradise Pens Black/Blue) is weird. I now have 3 pens inked with it, from the same bottle, within a week, and it seems like it's coming out in 3 different colors?

It's possible the middle one had some residual water in it. Maybe they make it from ground-up mood rings.

I'm late to the party. A couple of historical notes, as befits my age;-)

 

There was a post of an old Parker "Black" that seemed to fit in well with the blue-blacks. How old was that? I got into fountain pens around 1960. At that time blue-black was sort of a pale blue-grey and black was a darker shade of blue-grey;-) So in those days I really liked Sheaffer Permanent Jet Black which was -- BLACK! I could not see any overtones on the page but in the cartridges it looked a bit brown. I still like that ink though many today consider IT washed out.

 

For Sheaffer you have to give country of origin. The USA inks were very consistent in color during the years I used them. ( Parker inks I've found to be all over the place in color depending on year and country of origin.) And there are folks out here that are still using the USA Sheaffer inks!

 

I suspect that "blue-black" was originally an effort to reproduce the color of earlier generations of ink that was all one color -- a color determined by the ingredients, not the addition of dyes. Sort of all-natural color. These may have been iron gall inks. I imagine they fell out of favor because fountain pens don't like them and chemical dyes became available about the same time fountain pens did. That also opened up the option of ink in many colors.

I have been keeping small samples all on a single page for years and attach it below even though it is barely presentable and has some irrelevant-to-you notes to myself. I think its main use is that it shows the inks close to one another and a number of variables are controlled such as the paper and scanner is the same for every ink.

 

I'll just comment on a few. The Pelikan looks a bit brown on my monitor, but not on the inked page. There are two Parker blue-blacks. The classic Quink (here from England) tends to fade or turn green. Here it is almost turquoise on both monitor and paper. The "permanent" Parker blue-black is much darker and does not appear to fade so quickly. I rather like it, but unfortunately have no more and do not know where I got it.

 

The Aristotle iron gall is a bit brown on-screen, more blue on paper. In both cases it is quite a bit darker than other samples of this ink that I have seen on FPN.

 

Fahrney's is my favorite, It is darker with no hint of turquoise in paper. This is another mystery ink. I believe it was made for Fahrney's by Private Reserve but under different color names. Some were pretty clear matches to exisiting PR colors, but some, such as this one, were not. Now Fahrney's seems to be using the same color names as PR and I do not know what PR color this matches if any. I'm glad I have a full bottle;-)

 

My second choice among all the inks is the Slovenian Sheaffer. Fortunately it is reasonably priced and readily available.

Thanks for the samples ErrantSmudge. I really like the Diamine. Your scan is not too far from mine in the jumbled page I posted where there is a sample in the single word "Diamine". The Waterman does not look much like other posts of this ink nor my own experience with it which is that it is much more grey-green. There are various discussions of its successor, Mysterious Blue, (just a name change I think) and how it looks different wet, dry, three weeks later, and on different papers or in different pens. In no case does it look as attractive as your scan, which is a somewhat pale blue with a hint of grey, rather like a recently punctured cartridge of Jinhao Blue.

My bottle of Waterman blue-black, like most other inks in my collection, is several years old. I scanned that Waterman writing sample within an hour after I created it, so effects of fading should be minimal. I think the lighter color may be because the pen (a Phileas) is a bit on the dry side, and the Rhodia paper is not super absorbent.

 

I like the Diamine much better than Waterman's. Note that this is Diamine's standard "Blue-Black", and not their 1864 Blue-Black.

Wow, that Diamine BB is really nice, errant. How is the show/bleed on copy? Twilight was horrendous.

Diamine Blue-Black really is a rich BB but it does have some bleedthrough on copy paper.

 

This probably belongs in the comparisons forum, but I did a bakeoff of Diamine Blue-Black versus Waterman Blue-Black (the only other BB I have on hand) and Aurora Blue. I wrote samples all on the same sheet of 20lb. copy paper. Here's scans of front and back. You can see also where I crossed-out a correction (my Talentum has a M nib, not F) and the X-out shows pretty clearly on the other side. There's also a little bit of feathering noticeable on my lowercase "k" with the Diamine BB.

 

My Talentum is not an especially wet pen, but Diamine BB does flow pretty freely in it.
