To me, very dark blues like Oxford Blue are wonderful, but not blue-black.

I agree.  Maybe that's why I also like the dark green/blacks and gravitate towards dark teals.

Someone on Reddit asked what vintage Omas Extra Blue Black looks like so I posted these images, with a comparison to Sailor Souboku, Pilot Blue Black, and Pelikan 4001 Blue Black.

  • The photo with the bottles was done with a dip pen and taken after a few hours, when the Pelikan ink had gone pretty grey. The other photo with the Pelikan ink has it a few minutes fresh. Nakabayashi Think NOTE notebook, which feathers a bit. Ignore the fountain pen writing - this was a scrap sheet that was already partially used - it's some other ink.
  • The image of the four inks with fountain pen writing has the Pilot ink in a dry pen and the Pelikan in a wet pen. The swatches are just laying the back of the nib flat on the paper and scribbling. Rhodia pad.
  • The image with the Omas ink only is also a Rhodia pad.

I think the Omas is very interesting - I kind of love it, as long as it is in the right pen. Yeah, it's a bit like ballpoint blue black but much greyer/softer.
