Thanks, errant. I'll scratch that one off my list.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Thanks Errant. I just recently inked up with Akkerman #9 and wondered how it compared to Diamine Blue-Black. DB-B is clearly much wetter. Thank you.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Noodler's 54th Massachusetts. Like other Noodler's bulletproof inks, this one puts down a thick line. But my Cross ATX is also a wet pen.

The scan doesn't seem to reflect it but does the paper in front of you show a green tinge? I've been putting-off getting a bottle because I saw a few reviews that had it

I just looked at the sample under natural light, along with some of the other blues I have sampled. And to my eye, it does have a slight green tinge that isn't captured in the scan.

Aurora Blue-Black. Being a fan of Aurora's other two inks, I bought this one sight-unseen the moment it was available, even though I already have a blue-black I'm happy with (Diamine Blue-Black)

I do like this blue-black. It leans a little purple, it works well in the Aurora pen I've tried it out on so far. It flows well and writes smoothly, no starting or skipping issues. It has a traditional look to it, without looking washed-out like some other blue-blacks.

The swab sample is very heavy; I dropped two drops of ink on the page and smeared it around. It over-exposes the color, but it does reveal some red sheen.

Hmm.... it's interesting. I sort of like it. Does it flow like Aurora blue?

Has anyone tried the Noodler's waterproof "Henry Hudson Blue" ink (made exclusively for Fountain Pen Hospital in New York)? It is a deep, dark blue-black, and has that odd aroma of other Noodler's permanent inks.

I have! It's not particularly dark though. Let me load a pen and post a photo here..

Overall a good ink and great performance with the exception of dreadful cap-off times. Cap the pen when not in use—immediately! I like how it looks under a bright study lamp than in sunlight where it is way more green.

Interesting! I must not have given it a thorough try-out before deciding it was too dark for my taste. I'll have to give it another chance. Thanks for the comparison and images!

Henry Hudson also appears on the middle of page 5 of this thread where it looks a little different than here but in both cases I would have to say it is an interesting blue but not a blue-black even with a broad definition thereof;-)

For my tastes it is hard to beat the Slovenian ink with a Sheaffer label for a blue-black. It is not too hard to find and reasonably priced. I think there are multiple samples in this thread already. The old USA blue-black seemed much too light to me -- in particular, lighter than some of the scans of it in this thread. And I am a guy who did not find USA Sheaffer black, brown, burgundy, red or green to be too washed out. But that is getting into iffy territory as we have to rely on memories from 20 years ago, or samples that are made with ink 20 years old, or samples that were made with fresh ink 20 years ago, though I have say I have lots of USA Sheaffer ink on hand and I do not notice much divergence from my memory or my written records.

Thank you, Anti for the comparison.

Thank you, Bob for pointing out where to find it.

Here is an old test from August 2014:

I have a number of blue black iron gall based inks, so I thought I'd do a comparison. In addition to the usual color comparisons, and water tests, I thought I'd see how they looked when newly applied vs dried for over 24 hours.

I'll note that I bought Diamine's Registrar's Ink years ago, but had to get rid of it when it turned on me. After a couple of years on the shelf, the ink developed some dark gritty iron-like sediment in the bottom of the bottle which didn't mix when shaken, and the color of the remaining ink was watery grey, at best. When it was new, it was an exact match for Akkerman #10, which confirms my suspicions that Akkerman Ink is nothing more than rebottled Diamine. Not that that's a bad thing - I love Diamine Ink - but it helps with ones expectations. I hope Akkerman #10 doesn't turn on me...

I found that most of the IG inks changed color almost instantly from light blue to dark blue or nearly black except for R&K Salix, which changes color gradually to a medium blue black. Already, as I write this I can see the colors darkening...

My not-so-objective test also found the following:

Smoothest (most lubricated) ink - Montblanc Midnight Blue (IG), followed by Akkerman #10

Driest (least lubricated) ink - ESSRI followed by Pelikan Blue Black

Easiest bottle to fill from - Akkerman #10 unique glass necked 60ml bottle

Hardest bottle to fill from - ESSRI's plastic 110ml bottle

Fastest drying ink - ESSRI or Akkerman #10

Longest to dry - Montblanc Midnight Blue

Most water resistant - ESSRI & Akkerman #10 (tie), followed by R&K Salix

My favorite...hard to tell. Like my kids, I love each for a different reason.

Test Pen - Brause .75mm dip pen with overfeed

Test Paper - Clairefontaine Pupitre 90g

Good luck in your own ink adventures!
