Is This A Good Idea?

I just won an auction for a nice vintage Easterbrook J. Before I pay for it I would like some advice from some more experienced people. I know nothing about replacing ink sacs and such so would buying this pen be a good idea? Are vintage ink sacs cheap? Are they easy to replace? The seller says he has never used it.

I understand your hesitance because the seller said nothing about whether or not it has or needs a new sac but the time for those questions were before the auction was over. Pay for it and enjoy it. If it works as it is you are fine but if it needs work you can learn how to restore pens yourself (it is said that Esties are among the easiest to restore by the owner) or you can avail yourself of the services of the many fine pen restorers availbe today.

Hopefully there is no issue with the clip as the seller managed to hide it in every pic.

That is a horrible listing. I would not have bid without asking and getting answered several questions.

I'm going to speculate that you at least got a 9xxx nib, but I would bet it's one of the later ones.

You won the auction so you have to pay, no way around that now, ask these questions before the auction closes.

Esterbrook sacs are cheap and easy to replace, check out the repair subforum and you'll see very extensive guides to fixing it up. I do recommend getting a decent heatgun (you'll see why when you read the instructions) you can use a hairdryer but it's fraught and you're likely to burn out your hairdryer.
