i never thought the day would come when these two pens would lie together on my desk, but here they are: the hemingway and the astoria goliath, sharing the same design DNA:

i've been using this pen as my EDC for a couple of weeks now, so i suppose i should give it a formal debut of sorts. after 30 years of pen collecting, i'm ecstatic to have achieved my grail of grails: how do you do, mr. hemingway?

of course we know that this cost someone a small fortune, but that someone wasn't me. i can't go into the details, but let's call this a gift from a strong supporter of education, who thought of giving me a hemingway as a kind of reward for a lifetime of teaching literature and writing. the only trade-off is for me to teach some more, which i will happily be doing until i croak.
i've already used it to mark some student essays with:

i'm using carlo collodi ink in it, which in a way had been an ink waiting for the right pen. the nib's a springy medium, and it gives the orange-brown ink an inner glow:

at this point i can literally say that my urge to collect is over, although i'll still be picking up a few pens here and there to refurbish and resell, just for the fun of it. i hope (i know) that some of you who also like the hemingway won't need to wait for seniorhood to get yours, but in this case, i guess i dreamed long enough, and the idle dream became miraculous reality. i'll do my best to deserve this pen until my retirement day a few years from now (and i should say, it looks like i got my retirement present a little sooner than i expected--many thanks!)

This is the closest I could get to the Hemingway

It's is a nice everyday companion. I chose this pen over a Pelikan M200 due to the size and finish. The piston mechanism works fine but could be better. I like the way it feels in the hand and writes. And guess what - I own three of these in different finishes :D

Maybe one day I'll own the real Hemingway...

That is a good-looking pen. And you are using MB ink in it. Corn Poppy Red is my current favorite red. I do like orange pens for some reason.

The Hemingway is a nice pen. They are going for crazy prices now, though.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I love my Poseidon II, as well. The piston is ma bit stiff, but it doesn't bother me because it works fine. Mine is in blue bamboo acrylic. It's in my pen pouch every day.

Hi Jamesgibby, I missed your post, but even though with a great delay I want to warmly congratulate you for your acquisition.

It is hard to spend more than 2 thousands dollars to secure a Hemingway fountain pen, but this pen is just something unique and special.

Commenting on your post, penmanila wrote that owning a Hemingway WE put over his urge to collect. I do not know if this is true for other collectors, but there is no doubt that the Hemingway represents a solid achievement and a focal point in any pen collection.

I can never use mine without a satisfied smile on my face.

Use yours in great health.

~ jamesgibby:

For several years I've wondered if the WE Hemingway had a well-illustrated review somewhere.

Finding your fine review was a special treat, especially with such quality images.

Not knowing much about the 139 or the Hemingway, apart from what others write, your review filled in much about the appeal.

I hope that it continues to bring much pleasure as an often-used, always-treasured writer.

Thank you for preparing and posting this review and images.

Tom K.
