Parker Duofold Nib Question

I have a Parker Duofold pen that I've just gotten back together. I notice that the nib has a "P" stamped in it. What does this signify? Posting nib?

 

The nib has "Parker Duofold Pen P"

Is it possible the stamp is an R, perhaps poorly formed?

It's a P, very clear and distinct. It's also a wonderful writing nib. I love this one.

It means the nib was made by Parker in Jaynesville. When they were very popular, they outsourced nibs and used different letters to keep track. P, C, N, D, B, Z, and Y.

 

At least that is one theory.

Some Conklin nibs also have a letter on them, much like the Parkers. And, I, too, heard the P, N, D country of origin explanation about 25 years ago, but I've never seen anything to back it up.

Having read the thread at FPB I think we know nothing about the stampings. I owe Dan a call, I'll inquire as to if he ever found any information regarding the mystery letters.

I want to buy a Parker Duofold as a surprise gift for a lefty. Should I buy it with a particular nib or will just a standard medium do?

A left-handed person can use any standard nib. I think inks are more important for use left-handed people. A quicker drying ink to prevent smearing.

 

 

On the topic of nib letters, I always assumed Duofold nibs with "N" on them stood for Newhaven as those nibs were produced in England.
