SNAK - I am impressed you are an inkmeister!!!

This is really beautiful! I love these Mabie Todd nibs, and your home brewed ink is gorgeous!

Thanks, this was my Batch no.4 according to the bottle. It is from about a year ago I think. Back then I read up on Pharmacist's and pgary's posts about their iron gall ink recipes, plus some other online sources like Wiki and another comprehensive IG ink resource site I can't remember right now that dealt with the document conservation side of iron gall ink use. I tweaked a few recipes and did a number of batches to get the balance right between good IG quality (non-feather/bleed, waterproof, shading), preventing precipitates, and allowing colour dye to show up after the IG colour shifted from oxidisation.

I was really into it for a good few months and collected IG-compatible dyes from suppliers, but then once I was able to make something I was happy with, the interest sort of died off and I am now left with a few small bottles of IG inks and I only ink up the ones that haven't changed in quality or dropped sediments much. I made the master batches without any dye in them, and they look kind of transparent without any colour (when you write with them you don't see the lines immediately as they are transparent, like writing with water), but they turn dark grey/black after a few minutes on paper. The IG ink in this batch took the colour dye well and shows the colour well, but the IG component is rather weak, about the same as R&K Salix/Scabiosa or maybe weaker. There were really strong batches too, but they tended to drop precipitates and they turned so black that the colour dye had no chance of showing the colour after the IG oxidises in a few minutes on paper.

Anyway, I don't want to geek you out so if someone is interested, I will post the recipe, or they can PM me and I can send them the recipe and methods. I think I made a couple of posts about IG inks and my recipe too back when I was into it, maybe it will show up in the search but I am not good with finding things on FPN.

Is that an early Mother's Day present? Perfect colour match with the ink!

My daughter bought it for me for Valentines' day. I thought Momiji would be a perfect ink for mother's day. Thank you for noticing.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I can't imagine you being a non-flexy, black ink only type of guy, looking at your pens and inks now! How long ago was this when Ptero converted you?

I catch on quickly, I believe it was a couple of years ago Ptero converted me. I was originally a nail head fine to medium writer, a series of Sheaffer 82C's (flat tops) and Parker Duofold Seniors were my choice pen. Ive definitely learned a great deal of information, inks, paper, pens, repairs etc. Amberleadavis and dcpritch were instrumental in my growth.. :)

btw - the ink recipe mixing geek out was great! Although I would not make my own ink I totally appreciate your ingenuity.

Wow Tim, that pen is humongous! It looks like it can swallow a whole Goulet ink sample, including the sample vial too! Is it balanced well when you write with it?

Sorry about the dark photo..cell phone, in my office on a dark day, but I did want to capture the blue in the ink.

My Birthday Beauty !!!!!!!!!!

Wow. Never even knew this model existed. Love it! Are you able to do a fat upside down stroke like you can with a Namiki Falcon's nib? If so that may make the "wanted" list . . .

Some J. Herbin Bouquet D'Antan, a bit of Diabolo Menthe, some Diamine Aqua, Amaranth, and Grey, and J. Herbin Stormy Grey, of course! I don't have exact measurements. It was mostly the Bouquet D'Antan and Stormy Grey, with a couple drops each of everything else I listed. It gives a nice, glittery dark purple on wet bits when the gold is evenly distributed. I don't shake my pens, though, so sometimes more gold comes out than normal. xD

That makes sense... it is all Stormy Grey gold... :D .... I think I need to mix me a batch of stormy Grey with some Olive green...

Such a cute raccoon! I like the colors of the tree branch, too. :)

Just finished a new Frankenpen: Rosetta Napoleon II Lemon Ice with a #5 Edison feed and collar, with a 1947 standard Parker Vacumatic 14k semi-flex fine nib. I call it "Limoncello."
