Don't Just Tell Us About The Pen You're Using, *show* Us! - 2015

That is so gorgeous. I have been eyeing the Piccolo in Shiro Tamenuri forever, and once came very close to ordering it with either stubbed BB or flexed Music nib, but stopped myself for the cartridge/converter filling system. I am still thinking about it (in my back and forth way).

What ink is in your Decapod Twist?

I have been trying various inks. I think that the soft fine nib begs for a more saturated ink. So I am currently using Private Reserve's Electric DC Blue.
I had been eyeing this particular pen for a long while. But when Nakaya announced that the Ao-Tamenuri finish would be discontinued, I knew that I had waited long enough. I just can't put this pen down!

If you saw my "What's This ?" topic, the mystery was solved. The item in question turned out to be a Chinese calligraphy pen. The second picture is with the ink blotted; the ink is vintage Waterman Bleu Nuit.

The line differences and shading do not come from flex; this baby is stiff. So one would develop the skill of managing the angle of the edge against the paper. If any of you want to try it out, let me know? I would be pleased to see someone actually use it with skill. We can even pass it around if there's interest.

Wonderful! I love the Durabilt line from D.W. Beaumel & Co., most likely from the 1920s. Beaumel & Co. began making pens around 1901 and was considered a high quality manufacturer. I have had quite a few of them and the nibs on them always seem to be excellent - you are fortunate to have found one in your treasure trove of pens. Here are a couple of mine, not to take away anything from your new find but to share in the joy of your discovery:

My son's fiance sent me a box of envelopes to address for their upcoming wedding. I'm planning to use this pen and ink combo:

Sometimes the gold fleck in Stormy Grey is very pronounced, but it seems my photos rarely capture the full extent of the sheen and fleck. Here's a glimmer of what it looks like:

I like that nib. But I hope the name of that ink is not foreboding for their future life....

Thanks. The nib on mine is just great, as you mentioned. My pen is stamped as "Durabiltwin". The pencil doesn't seem to work, and I did a cautious repair on a couple cracks at the clip, and it's secure now. I'm using this one at work today. Wonderful pen!

A Chinese Calligraphy Pen ? Interesting.

My first impression scrolling down the thread and looking at your picture was (before reading the text) : "Muhaha, incredible this crazy guy is writing with a chisel"

That's extraordinarily interesting. Game of you to try and use it.

I'm surprised, to be honest, because in the years I lived in China I never saw any metal implements used in calligraphy -- only brushes or bamboo. On top of that, the design and ornamentation of the handle looks distinctly un-Chinese. But, having never seen anything like this before, I cannot say what it isn't any more certainly than I can say what it is! Either way, it's a delightful curiosity. Thanks for sharing it.

Ptero, Houston -- I'll write with anything....

Houston -- yes, I was surprised too, for sure. A friend is a Korea scholar; I wonder if maybe its roots are there. Although my colleague who identified it is generally pretty reliable on things like this.

Wow Tim, I am soooo glad you didn't use Oxblood when you wrote that. I thought it was some kind of Victorian surgical instrument Jack the Ripper would have used! Is it contemporary or vintage?

Oh that is going to be beautiful on envelopes! I am sure your future daughter-in-law will love it. Would you do waterproof spray or something on top of the writing? I can't remember if Stormy Grey is water resistant or not. I have a feeling it isn't.
