Don't Just Tell Us About The Pen You're Using, *show* Us! - 2015

Houston, how long did you have to practice to get your expressions to match? Great looking dog! (and the pens are nice too)

I've been working hard to emulate some of the better qualities of my dog. Some day, with grace, I may be a worthy companion to my dog, and a worthy scribe for my pens. In the meantime, equal measures vanity and humility.

BTW: I'm secretly in awe of you, Amberlea. Aw, shucks... Now I've outed myself.

I particularly like the writing from 1, 4, and 9.

Thank you so much for the reply!

I agree about the Baystate Blue and De Atramentis Indigo. Both have stunning color.

I need more broad nibs.

Oh how cute (both of you)!

And you forgot to tell us what's in the plate next to your computer.

You've got beautiful handwriting and pen. Would be lovely to see more.

Gorgeous writing....what ink is that?

Hi Houston, it's great to **see** you and your dog and to have you back with us!

Spring has sprung here in Northern Minnesota. That is, the snow is gone and it may not dip below freezing for the next few days. Nothing is green yet - not even close - but the ice may come off the lakes this week and the maple trees have been flowing sap. I've been boiling like crazy and already have put up 7 gallons of maple syrup. Not much time lately to reply to this thread but it sure is fun watching, 'specially when we see pics of friends.

Cheers, David

Alt-Goldgrun is one of my favourites! It looks beautiful in the demonstrator. I should do that some time. I would be looking at the ink inside the pen all the time, distracted.

I agree. It´s a beautiful ink. I´ve only had it for two weeks, but it hasn´t left the 580.

I use it a lot for notes in my Midori planner as a nice contrast to the basic notes and writing which is mostly done with MB midnight Blue and Waterman Havana.

I´ll have to try Alt-Goldgrün in my rather wet Pelikan stub some day soon.

@SNAK - For a surprisingly large pen both length and diameter the balance is near perfect. The PBG holds nearly a full bottle of ink and the Parker #12 size nib sings on paper. The singing reminds me of a Pelikan pen I once had.....I have a writing sample I was going to include but for some reason it ended up in my shred pile.

Wow what a pen. And I am sure with that stub of a nib the ink in the pen can be used up fairly quickly too! Beautiful writing sample.

You're kind, SNAK. (I'm a compatriot Aussie, by the way... Just residing in Blighty.) The pen-hound is empirically and by far the cuter mammal.

Not sure if you were genuinely curious about what's in the little dish by the computer, or just taking the (bleep)... But, just on the off chance you actually wanted to know, it's a dish of sea shells and beach-washed coral, all mementos from the romantic history I share with my beloved. Some from Oz, and some from Fiji.

No I was genuinely curious, and I was thinking more along the lines of some delectable morsels, but travel momentos are even nicer!

And this is something for you.

Pen: TWSBI Vac 700 with Massag G dip nib

Pencil: Wörther clutch pencil 3.15mm 5B lead

Ink: Platinum Carbon Black and Pigment Sepia (the mix is completely waterproof under watercolour wash for me)

Paper: DIY sketchbook with 140gsm cartridge paper

Pain: Winsor & Newton Artists watercolour half pans

Currently I have watercolour pencils, but no "real" watercolour pans.

Do you have a comparison between pencils and pans?

In case you have, what do you prefer?

I think I like watercolour because you can actually see each pigment mixing with another on the palette or on paper, and different pigments have different properties. It's great fun to play with. Lots to learn, lots to experiment with.

I love looking at the colourful paint in half pans too. It's a bit like lining up bottles of ink and admiring the pretty colours of each one of them. I do the same with my collection of nail polish bottles.

Assuming you meant the ink in the Conway, it's Diamine Syrah...which can look very different in different lights. Sometimes it's a straight dark burgundy, other times it comes up a bit more purple-y. Normally I prefer something a bit more in the plum-aubergine spectrum, but the Syrah is a nice change of pace without doing anything radical, like, say, using blue or black.

Enjoy the soaring temperatures! My friends in Brisbane and Perth are breaking out the woolly jumpers (read "sweaters") because winter is descending, and it is dipping below 25 Celsius.

Many thanks for the thought. The packaging makes me sentimental, but I don't actually partake, myself. I know, I know. Tantamount to treason. But my bride is a frequent happy little vegemite. I find post-vegemite kisses an ambivalence. :D

and a quick turn from the Lohan book... should have put some time into it... ah well, it is what it is...

fpn_1428560619__3c.jpg

I think it´s quite good for a quick attempt, :)

Ok, as you already sketched the Chateau, I had to improvise and made a stand alone tower out of it.

But first this started with an experiment.

I used an Rotring Rapidograph set a long time ago at engineering school for technical drawings.

Since more than 25 years the set was unused (and of course I didn´t removed the india ink and did not cleaned them).

As I have some bottles of Rohrer & Klingner Zeichentusche (India Ink) which I normally not use I wondered if this ink might also work in a Rapidograph.

Ok this use case is not mentioned at the R&K site, but I thought I could try it.

So I cleaned all the dried ink from the 0.35 mm Rapidograph and filled it with Rohrer & Klingner Zeichentusche Turquoise.

And...... it seem to work, the pen work flawlessly :)

So I started to scribble

(Rotring Rapidograph ISO 0,35mm ..... Rohrer & Klingner Zeichentusche Turquoise)

(Pentel Water Brush)

(Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer)

I´m not satisfied.

What I learned is:

  • Turquoise is not ideal to skribble (architectural things), it looks really strange....
  • To improvise and invent details is not that easy (at least for me)...

But as Prvt. Toter said before "ah well, it is what it is..."

Snak, your Butterfly is amazing, great job

Thanks for the pictures and the detailed description.

I think I might order some watercolour in the future.

I simply cannot come close to what comes out of some of all your pens, so I'll be satisfied with showing you what I have today:

Mysterioso Pen w/Laban fine in the Esterbrook collar and feed (yes, a true Frankepen)

Parker Parkette Deluxe - looking very Depression era "California or Bust", but really a fun writing pen

Esterbrook M2 2968 - It's an Esterbrook...not much else to say

Diamond Point - maybe a late Taper End. This is simply a gorgeous pen all over. Wet and smooth in every sense.

Houston, thanks for sharing... love the pup... and the desk/work area looks inviting... I can imagine smooth sounds coming out of those speakers, birds chirping outside the windows, and wonderful correspondence going on at the desk.

The only Conway Stewart I have is a wet noodle...always wanted an uber flexy pen, then when I got one I can hardly write with it... I am better off with the Esterbrooks, less skill required. :happyberet:

...and some random scribbles as I flushed and filled new pens for the rotation...

fpn_1428869685__taccia_crop_med.jpg

The pen is an inexpensive Taccia -- kind of a nothing pen, other than the great, crazy-crayon colours. But I'm proud of having revived it today with a bit of risky, really-no-clue-what-I'm-doing repair work. It wasn't worth enough to send off to a pro, so I got lucky ripping out the nib and feed with little more than rather a lot of grunting. It's now back to writing as well as it ever did -- which is surprisingly well, actually. Enjoyed jotting with it.

Ink in both is Akkerman Parkpop Purper.

If you think everything is going well... you obviously have no idea what is really going on!
