Tried my hand at dip pens after a disastrous first attempt a few months ago. I actually got to write many words before I had to re-dip. The secret was to burn away the coating on the nibs!

You could put a flame under the tip for a few seconds but not for too long, or I sometimes just put the new nib in a strong iron gall ink and start writing, and the acid in IG ink usually takes care of the machine oil after a few lines. Plus, I use these homemade plastic reservoir so the ink usually doesn't bead up and come off in a big blotch (technical word) to ruin your work.

I got the idea from some metal sheet reservoirs. Lower middle is a cheap Osmiroid pen holder that came with that metal reservoir, and the one to the right of it is another type of metal sheet reservoir that I got from calligraphy shop.

But you can easily make them from thin plastic sheet, like the plastic container that a lot of fruits and prepared veggies come in (e.g. strawberry punnet, prepared salads). Just cut them thin and long and make a bend so that the tip of the plastic will gently touch the underside of the dip nib. When my plastic DIY ones get too dirty I just get another one as I make a lot in one go. I chuck them when I'm done with a dip nib anyway so once I get the reservoir and nib set up I don't move them around until it's time to replace the nib. I tried the DIY coiled metal reservoir etc but in my experience the simple plastic sheet reservoir is the easiest to set up and to keep it in position when I dip into ink or rinse the nib with water after I finish a session. I use them for all my dip pens of various size and shape.

Gweimer -- better add a digit to your shopping budget...beautiful pen, for sure. I'm interested in them for historical reasons -- it's the first of three times I know of that an overfeed has been advertised as a significant improvement to the writing experience. The second was the Wearever Pennant, immediately post WWII. I have a number of those nibs and I can promise you the attachment does not touch ink unless the pen is leaking. The third, of course, is the Delta Fusion nib, where the alchemy is produced by the superglue attaching the gold piece. Again, and there is a lot about this in our forums, I own this one, love the nib, but have severe (SEVERE!) doubts about the overlay's efficacy. Does it look better with the overlay? Absolutely. Does it work better? hmmm.

Curiously enough, I came across one locally today, and was looking at it. I even got to hold it. We'll see if I have something interesting to report by next week.

Thx for the link.

The second one has an interesting hexagonal shape. Is that OK or awkward to hold??

I find it extremely comfortable to hold. however i want to angle my nib there is a flat for my finger to keep control of...but then again it was my first FP so i might be a little biased.

Now if you would place a broad italic nib in that, it could double for a screwdriver.....

I was out of town for a week but, unlike Tringle, managed to use a fountain pen fairly regularly. I traveled with a Kaweco AL Sport loaded with Sailor yama-dori and a TWSBI Micarta inked with Sailor Cigar. Never had a problem with either in air travels.

Looks like I missed an awful lot here the past couple of weeks. I see 00Photo has bored of traditional pens and is now using power tools with nibs. What's next, farm implements?! :D

Some great writing with awesome pens and ink. I always look here first when I've been offline and am never disappointed.

I've been trying for years to acquire an Oldwin pen and finally opportunity and funds coincided; this pen was made in 2007, arrived today and I'm happy to show some pics below:

The pen material is fairly dark blue on one side and has the most amazing iridescence on the other:

The cap has an interesting clarity which shows off the lovely blue color:

Great nib! Super smooth and has a nice bit of flex
