Don't Just Tell Us About The Pen You're Using, *show* Us! - 2015

Neither would the parents! I was fascinated by Sheaffer Snorkels as a kid, and I whined until my parents bought me a PFM I (retail then was $10, a III would have been $5 more). They didn't allow me to take it to school (I was in seventh grade) because they were afraid I would lose it. Can't remember how it happened, but eventually it did get lost. By that time I had a sterling Parker 75 and a Montblanc 149, and I haven't lost a pen since.

Here's a photo of what my PFM I looked like:

That's so interesting. Out of curiosity, what was the value of $10 back then in todays terms? For example, what could you have bought with that same $10 if you spent it on something else back then?

McDonald's had a slogan, "Change back from your dollar." You could buy a cheeseburger, french fries, and a milkshake for about 50¢.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

According to a handy-dandy inflation calculator I just found, $10 in 1962 was worth a little over $78 in 2014, if you figure inflation using the Consumer Price Index. Of course, some things have gone up more. The $75 list price I paid for a Montblanc 149 in 1967 is now $935.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Ptero, what a pity that you've ruined a beautiful drawing by spilling water onto it.

That's a lovely pen.

Years ago my father gave me his - it was black (not sure what version), I always struggled to get ink into it and the cap was not very tight.

I used to keep it on my desk at work, which turned out to be a mistake as it was stolen.

I keep meaning to replace it not with the older version, but rather one of the newer ones which take cartridge/converter.

50 years ago, if I had $10,

  • I could eat so much junk food till I couldn't get up anymore.
or
  • I could buy a nice pen.
Swapping the $10 of 50 years ago into $100 of present day in my mind, it makes me want to stop buying coffee out or having takeaway (takeout) and spend a bit more on pens, so that in 50 years time, they will improve so much in value! :eureka:
