Amazon Uk Carene Craziness

I know this seems to happen regularly, but I think it's worth mentioning when the price of the pen goes beneath the price of a nib.

 

Black GT med Carene for £72.50

 

8 left at the moment (should be 7 as I've just got one!) No other models, just the black GT.

I took advantage of this offer and the Carene arrived his morning. I flushed the pen and noticed it had most likely been tested as there were blue ink residues in the nib.

 

After a good flush through and time for the pen to dry out a bit on a towel, I decided to use one of the cartridges supplied with the pen as I am waiting for a bottle of ink specifically to use in the pen; a Waterman black.

 

Performance was to say the least abysmal. Ink flow was practically non existent and when it did work it skipped something terrible. Under the loupe the nib looked as though it was aligned properly although the finish was not good at the tip.

 

I decided to give it a little run through with the Micro-Mesh using from the 3600 down to the final 12000 fine sheets. Using Mr Browns previous advice on smoothing I did as per his instructional video. (This guy is a treasure!)

 

The results were quite alarming.... I actually did this twice to get the desired results.

 

I am glad to say that the pen now works very nicely and the ink flows very well.

 

It is a shame that the pen was not good 'out of the box' but with a little judicious attention it has saved a lot of frustration.

 

Its now a nice functional pen in the collection.

I was rather lucky in December and bought this pen on a similar deal. I live offshore so it came down as £60 once VAT was deducted.

 

Very happy with it. Writes nice and wet.

For those who may be tempted by this offer...

 

I sent a message asking whether the Carene could be supplied with a different nib to the one specified.

 

I received a reply message this morning to inform me to send a mail message with the order so that a different nib unit could be fitted.

 

So.... If you want a Stub nib or other nib type at a very competitive price, get your skates on guys.

 

Last check there were seven left.

Oops, it looks like something got changed.

 

When I go to the link above, it is 72.50 pounds yet, but it comes from Amazon itself, not the seller MrPen Pens, who answered the stub nib change question. That seller is currently sells it at 150 pounds.

 

I sent an email to Amazon if they will change the nib, too. I hope they do that..

Tempted very much so as the Carene is likely to be my next pen.However to me the marine amber finish is worth the extra £20. As It would defeat logic of saving up for a high end pen if stumble on the final straight and go for the lesser finish for the sake of £20.

 

Amazon has some great deals I recently got a mechanical pencil that retails for £100 for £25 off there.

After some more research and a chat this morning with Mr Ford of 'Mr Pen' I can add a few more details.

 

The way things panned out are:

 

Pen advertised on Amazon at reduced price of £72.50

 

I contacted Amazon and asked if a different nib could be supplied in the pen. The e-mail reply from Amazon, which was from Mr Pen, said yes, send a request at the time of ordering.

 

It turns out that Mr Pen simply replied to a request from Amazon who asked the same question I asked.

 

Mr Pen do have the Waterman Carene and can supply the pen with a different nib unit (Stub), but not for the price on Amazon; their price is as their website at approx £150.00.

 

Mr Pen are not fulfilling this order at the £72.50 price point. The order is possibly being fulfilled by a company in France at the advertised £72.50.

 

From a purchaser point of view, I asked a question in all innocence and was given slightly misleading or incomplete information.

 

I thank Mr Ford of Mr Pens for his time and sterling service in helping me to understand what had occurred here.

 

The Waterman Carene is still a great price albeit with a medium nib!

 

Apologies to any forum members if my earlier post has been misleading but I did post in good faith.

I was aware of that but I tried to be a smart --se and cut out that additional step!

 

I did learn a little more about the workings of Amazon though.

 

And.... having made contact with Peter Ford at Mr Pen I now have a new Italix pen on the way so it didn't work out too badly.

The Amazon nib change struck me as too good to be true - glad that was cleared up. And having read of your disappointment elsewhere, Chrissy, good to hear the stub is on its way at last.

 

Now what is it with the prices on this particular model anyway? I'm envisioning Mickey Mouse starting work at the Waterman factory and Carenes instead of water carrying brooms...

On many occasions I have found Amozon.co.uk cheaper than Ebay. Especially to Australia because VAT is removed. If I get a few items, then the postage per item is small enough to almost negate it. This Carene actually only cost 60 Pounds plus postage. Such a cracking deal really.
