Did You Know Mb Burgundy Red Is An Iron Gallic Ink

On page 42 of the black Montblanc Writing Instrument Service Guide that accompany every new MB fountain pen, there is a note with the following statement:

"Important Note. The use of Burgundy Red ink is not recommended for the Star Walker Midnight Black series. The ferro-gallic content (of the ink) might cause colour changes on the nib and forepart in the long-term."

I never knew the Burgundy Red ink was an IG ink. It's not very water resistant though.

I have a few bottles starting from the 1990's and none behaves like an iron gall nut ink. The mentioned statement is only printed in a few booklets and not all; in others the blue-black ink is mentioned; therefore I strongly believe that this is a printing error.

I checked the booklet that came with my 146 purchased new in a MB boutique in 2011. While there are no page numbers in the booklet, it says the exact same thing. Interestingly it refers only to that one model, which I take to mean that the particular Starwalker is made with materials susciptible to damage by that specific ink. I didn't know about the iron gall either. I love MB Burgundy Red, especially in 146R bordeaux.

Happiness is a real Montblanc...

It's not.

Iron gall nut inks mainly show two important characteristics: permanency and they darken while drying; burgundy shows neither.

Also I don't know of any recent iron gall nut inks which come in cartridges. Both Lamy and Montblanc blue-blacks did not sell an iron gall nut version of those inks in cartidges.

Most likely a printing, setting, translating error from the outsourced service of the company who die the booklet ?!

You won't believ how many mistakes you find in any product catalogs!

You could try to call Montblanc and ask :-)

It's possible the ink has been reformulated since then.

There have been many inks that were IG that have been reformulated so that they were no longer IG but looked about the same.

The current bottle of Burgundy Red I have does not darken nor have any water resistance, so it looks like there is no IG content. Maybe it did at one point in the past. I don't have the Starwalker Midnight Black pen, so wont worry about it. If I did, I'd probably check with MB before running this ink through that pen.

I love running the ink in my 146R too. Shades really nicely when flexed in my Pilot Elabo.

Both versions (Burgundy and Bordeaux) are inks with great shading and a nice vintage look! Great inks, even the both write a little bit on the dry side.

The older Bordeaux was my first red ink which did not look like the red teachers used for correcting my tests ;-)

Together with Parker Penman Ruby one of the more interesting inks in my "small" collection of ca. 10-15 inks back in 1996!

I think Platinum still does with their Blue Black, both bottles and their proprietary cartridges.
