Request To All M600/800/1000 Owners

Hello FPN,

 

I'm not a regular contribuiter here, but I do love writing/schetching and fountain pens. I'm on my 4th Pelikan now.. started slow with an M200, then an M800, M400 and now M1000.

 

To me the Souveran design is the best in the world: fits my grip best and the esthetics are top notch too.

 

Now on to my request. I can get quite obsessed by the "perfection" level of a pen so I end up noticing all kinds of things that probably normal people don't bother with. One of the things I've noticed with my M800 and M1000 is the presence of some rings around where the striated part of the barrel meets with the section. I am adding a picture to show what I mean exactly. This is truly visible only when the the light strikes the pen at a specific angle.

 

 

I'm just wondering, do your pens have this as well? Thanks in advance for responding and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Mine - no. But about half an inch further back wear marks from screwing and un-screwing the cap of course.

None on mine (M800 Green striated).

My brown tortoise M800 does not have that appearance. I'm not sure that it's anything to be concerned about as long as the pen is functioning properly.

My 2 M1000s (black) and my Green M800 pens dont have the marks like your picture.

I don't think they are threads because as far as I can see each is an individual circle (not part of a helix).

I think you are right, but it will probably always bother me when I see it. Wondering if I should ask for another one, but since I've already seen 2 pens having this issue it might be quite likely that the next one is the same. That's what I was trying to gauge with this post: how frequent is it?

If someone who doesn't have the issue has the technical means, could you take a similar picture of your pen? I'd just like to have a reference for future comparisons.

This, rather than a few nearly invisible rings on your pen, is your real issue.

I don't think it's meant as hate. But he/she is implying that you may be a bit.... well, frankly, nitpicking. Everything man made has its imperfections. If the pen functions and writes well, I'd be satisfied with it.

Life is too short to be AR about such things that can only be seen in certain lights.

Once aware of certain small oddities, it will continue to bother you. Return the pen, tell them you don't want one with those 'problems'.

 

Do stay way from non NOS Vintage pens.

Those are threads. Take a look at some of the translucent caps in the Cities series, San Francisco, Shanghai, et., and you can see the exact same pattern inside the cap. http://www.nibs.com/PelikanBerlinStckPage.htm#SF My guess is that barrel is both screwed on and glued/epoxied. Maybe someone on the Pelikan sub-forum knows the assembly process for the the pens? The OP may have a pen where slightly more than normal of the threads are showing or he has the light perfectly focused. I know that when I checked my pens they were inked, Duhh! I will check again when I flush the next one.

 

Original Poster: your first post says that you noticed these rings/threads on both your M800 and M1000, would you mind post pictures of both pens? How did you light the picture that you posted? And, where your pens purchased from an authorized Pelikan dealer?

No I don't see the rings on my M1000 or 600. My 800 is a demonstrator and it is just the thing to have when I want to look inside the pen. I don't see the extra rings on it the way it appears in the picture.

If you look at the video here at 2:56, you can see them reaming the inside of the binde. My guess is that the "threads" you see are just some spurious marks left by the reaming tool.
