Smaller Than Lamy Cp1 ?

I have a Lamy from the 1980s that looks EXACTLY like the CP1, has the logo in the right place etc. - but is just a touch thinner. I always thought it is a CP1 pen, until I ordered the Z26 cartridge, and it doesn't fit, it is too thick (by just a fraction if a millimeter) - then I ordered a Lamy nib for the CP1 (the 1.1 italic) and guess what: it is also a touch too large, it fits the grooves but falls off...

So what kind of pen do I have? Did Lamy ever make a CP1 that is just a touch thinner than the CP1??? Or is there a difference between European models and US models?

Modern converters won't work in the 1980s CP1. You'll need to use a proprietary Lamy cartridge or the squeeze converter that was used back in that time (quite difficult to find). I'd recommend using a Lamy cartridge and refilling with a syringe as needed.

Is the nib marked 585 (which would be gold)? My two 80s CP1s have rhodium plated gold nibs, though neither is the black version.

The nib has no marking whatsoever - just plain. Color is silver. It is a little slimmer than the nibs sold today. When and why did Lamy make this change? How can I get nibs that fit this older CP1?

I don't know when the change was made, and why can only be answered by Lamy. With no marking it is likely just a steel nib. The only way to get another nib is to look for other pens of the same vintage. eBay is your best bet. These 80s CP1 pens are better quality than the current offerings, in my opinion.

The earlier version of the cp1 is slightly different from the current cp1

also look for soapytwist's scans of the 1979 catalog.

the nibs are different too, very hard to find the older style nibs.

Dear Risingsun, Christoph and Hari - thank you so much for the info…. I am so glad I came here and didn't expect to get such a fast and detailed response. The good news is, I now know what pen I have, the bad news, I now have a nib and converter that don't fit…. I guess I have to keep my eye open on eBay.

Merry Christmas!
