A Lucky Ebay Find

The listing said W. Germany, one of the out of focus pictures showed the EF stamp on the section. The rounded ink view windows was another confirmation of an original barrel. The piston knob end showed the L mark very clearly. The only doubt was if the clip was correct with the inserted ball. One of the pictures hinted at the characteristic chamfer that such clips have.

 

The BIN price was reasonable for an early Lamy2000, but anyway I decided to wait 24hrs and if no one had bought it by then, I would buy. The time passed, no one had bought so I bought and the pen arrived yesterday in India.

 

as shown it was full of dried ink, a well loved pen. The pen is now completely overhauled and pending photography, all features correct including an 18K nib and thankfully no section or cap cracks.

Great first generation 2000 Hari and, unlike mine, the nib looks OK.

Thanks! well the price was not Sumgai, i am just glad that all parts were received intact and in the original configuration as we understand the model so far. I was not very keen on pulling the trigger but then when it seemed that no one else was interested, I decided to take my chance.

 

The early nibs are very good. The EF on this is ground exactly like the EF on Montblancs in the 60s and 70s.

 

BTW are you also on WUS and do I know you from there?

Lovely find Hari. Congrats. The pen looks to be in very good condition.

Hari - with every early pen I've had (three now), there have been slight leaks from where the steel joins the makrolon on the section. I've also had one seep from where the plastic joins the steel by the breather hole, and one also had one almost imperceptible leak where the clear ink window plastic joined the black plastic.

I'm not sure if this is just an age thing, or if it might have been a QC issue with the earlier pens, but if you discover ink residue on your fingers and aren't sure where it came from, then you probably have the same problem! On the bright side, I've found Captain Tolley's to be an effective remedy for these issues.

Soapytwist, how do you apply the Captain Tolley's to the ink window cracks? I've used the crack cure on cracks on cap lids, for instance, but that's much easier.

It's interesting how they imprinted the barrel/section early on, but not sure when they stopped doing that. Seems like now days they don't bother much with imprints as everyone seems to know what it is now.

Karl, I don't know how many earlier German pens you have, but one of the things that strikes me about my Osmias and early Kawecos and other PFs is how often the nib size as well as the model of pen is stamped on either the barrel or blind cap. It seems to be a distincitively German thing up to about the 1950s or maybe 1960s.

lucky so far, no leaks/seepage yet on any of Lamy 2000s, both old and new.

Apply on area of leak, allow to leach in for about 30 secs, then wipe residue off with a wet cloth. Do this a couple of times, then leave to set for 24 hours. Fill pen and check for leaks (this can mean over a period of days if the leak is minuscule), then empty, dry and repeat if necessary. Normally if you can manage to apply to the 'other' side of the leak as well it can speed the process, but because that's the inside of the barrel I've avoided doing it in case I leave any behind!
