To "jot" down something quickly, or to sign their name- yes.

Yes, I am nervous about it, and I watch closely, especially since many of

these people are teenagers (I teach HS computers)!

I carry BP pens in my portfolio (or in my desk) if someone needs a pen

on a LT basis.

I try to avoid the situation by having other pens available, but inevitably the situation arises when I'm trapped with only a fountain pen, the other person sees it and asks to borrow it for a moment - usually to just jot something down. Inside I'm torn to pieces, worried what will happen in the hands of someone accustomed to ballpoints. Outwardly, I casually hand over the pen uncapping it myself and make soft mention, "It's a fountain pen. Please don't apply any pressure to the paper when writing with it." I usually receive an odd look. They write and hand the pen back to me without comment. Little does the user know the turmoil and anxiety their request brought me.

And for the pen . . . so far, so good. Knock on wood.

My girlfriend has been eying my pen collection with increasing ardor has it continues to grow. But I have been loath to share because I have always heard that a pen's nib shapes itself to the user's style and shouldn't be used by different writers. Lately she has been asking for corroborating documentation for this position. And I am beginning to wonder if this is a real issue or not. I would really like to share my collection and hobby with her. Any opinions?

It is often said by people who are expert and knowledgeable about fountain pens and I think it is true especially those with gold nibs. In my case, I just bought and gave my wife one so she would not use mines, especially my valuable, favorite pens. Fountain pens are like pair of shoes which mold and adopt for your comforts and usability through continuous use. Writing with a fountain pen is a culture in itself!

i can understand why people with 21 K nibs or even 14 K nibs are reluctant to lend out their fountain pens, cause they are very soft and responsive to writing.

i yearn for the sailor professional gear 21k nib...

the lamy 2000 is already SOOOO SMOOOOTH... i wonder how's the transition from Lamy 2000 to the Sailor Professional Gear?

the difference from my humble church mouse's rotring stainless steel to the lamy 2000 18K gold is already a night and day difference for me.

This thread just won't die, but I couldn't resist.

I have a friend who had his Montblanc sprung by someone else right in front of him. What would that feel like? What would go through your mind?

It's not just the thought of a sprung nib, but if anyone drops my pen, I want it to be me. Er ... you know what I mean.

Well, my girlfriend uses whatever she likes and wants... and I like that. But then she respects my two favourite pens, but not because they're my favourites, but because of the special nibs. Oblique nibs I usualy don't share, all the others I don't mind... at least with my girlfriend... nobody else :P

I usually let people borrow my pens, but that's because I mostly carry Hero 616s, and those are cheap and nearly indestructible. Plus my friends always handled the pens extra carefully when they see it's not a 'regular' pen!

I'm willing to in principle, and I have before, but I won't let someone use it without a little bit of instruction and my experience is that most people are only interested in jotting something down quickly.

I have yet to lend anyone my beautiful M800. However, I have another daily writer, a lovely M200 and I've let other people use it on several occassions. It's always a pleasure seeing people getting interested in fountain pens simply by letting them use one of yours !

It extremely rare when I lend a fountain pen to someone, unless it is a delicate person or someone who is used to use fountain pens, otherwise, I never lend my fountain pens.

I've never had a pen that was worth much, so I did lend them occasionally. If I ever manage to get a really good one, I think I'd hesitate. Maybe carry a cheap pen for that purpose? Now, my guitar is another story. People who know me know better than to even ask.

There's an old addage:"Never let anyone borrow your pipe, your wife, or your fountain pen". I tend to agree, with the possible exception of pens with steel nibs. They're are less likely to deform with pressure like gold. I'm a lefty, and I'm sure that a right handed person would change the tines on the nib if they used it very long.

Usually I have a couple of fountain pens on my desk at work, and often some colleagues enter into my office and begin to draw or to write on a piece of paper using the first pen under his hand. Up to now no one of my pens have been damaged in this way, and I will continue with this habit.

I am uncomfortable when people use my things, especially anything hobby-related, and I imagine that that will apply to my FPs as well.

No I don't. My fountain pens are my secret, and they rarely stray more than 3 feet from my desk, always in their boxes unless I'm writing with them.

When I do take them out, I carry a ballpoint as well so I can give that out to others.

Loving Mont Blanc and everything fountain pen!!!!!!!!

I think it's a good thing to lend out your fountain pens...how else will people convert? However, I think it's better not to take the risk of them ruining your absolutely favorite pen.

Anyway, we're used to tossing our pens to the other...my classmates know I'm not going to toss that $180 Sonnet to them...

Fingers crossed for Sheaffer’s future
