For those that use mechanical pens what is your poison?

 

I used to prefer 0.3 mm lead but after a while I have realised 0.5 mm lead is more versatile and stronger. I currently love my 0.5 mm Rotring 800 :D

0.5mm, anything wider would not be able to fit into the square boxes of the Chinese writing paper, anything thinner would be brittle and prone to breaking, heck I even find 0.5mm breaking at times too.

Hi,

 

Pencils don't find their way into my hand very often, but it seems there's always one tagging along in my satchel or case. I was glad to acquire a Sheaffer Tuckaway pencil, but its not seeing much use at all.

 

For the longest time 0.3 & 0.5 mechanical pencils of the table draughting variety were to hand, but over the last few years switched to a very basic rotring 300 2mm clutch pencil (lead holder).

 

I can shape the point as I wish, and change the leads with ease.

 

When travelling light, should there be a need for more colours than my daily writer FP, I take the rotring 300 and coloured leads rather than more pens and colourful inks.

Ah sorry, I will have to modify the poll, I forgot about the non standard sizes

 

I have not tried 0.4 mm yet, I will have to try someday, maybe it will displace 0.5 mm for me

0.5, and preferably soft (B or 2B). For really fine work I have a 0.3, but I'm going to have to order some leads for it soon.

Lead size is important but your forgot the other more important aspect....

 

What softness or hardness do you use in that size.

 

While I was a drafter on the board I lived with a 0.3mm pencil that had 2h lead but then when back over it with 0.5, 0.7, and even 0.9 with Most with HB lead or sometimes even softer. To get my lines just the right thickness and weight. Art in my book!

 

Today I use a 0.7mm lead with the softest lead I could fine 2B, I use this to do my Cryptogram etc.

 

Love it.

You forgot the 1.1mm lead size, I think Yard-O-Led has pencils that use this size.

+ 1.3, 1.4, 3.0, 3.15, 3.5... ;)

I use lead holders, rather than mechanical pencils; no clue what the diameter size of the leads are and I can't find a ruler marked in metric to actually measure.... I'd guess that they're at *least* 1 mm.

0.7 for me. I use my pencils for writing (crosswords/sudoku puzzles mostly) and not for drawing.

 

At my usual writing angle the tip will get a stubby shape giving a nice line variation.

and flipped the other way you will have then a needle fine point for very small writing.

0,5 4B lead (switching over to 2B considering that 4B gets used up WAYYYY too quickly)

 

Mostly because shaker pencils only come in 0,5 lead. (I only have shaker pencils)

Surprising to me is that 0.9 mm pretty popular considering, at least in my country, Australia, the standard sizes are that is sold in normal shops is 0.5 and 0.7 mm mechanical pencils and the general populace doesn't even know other sizes exist.
