I had the same experience with Poussiere deLune....

 

I like it but it is less purpelish and more like grey with a hue.... as what I have seen in other reviews

Thank you for the amazing post. But how do I check which version it is before actually opening a bottle of RH?
I want the version 4.

If you can find it made in 2015 it's definitely the most recent version.

I bought my Rouge Hematite from the only brick-and-mortar in my state back in March of 2014, and it must have been sitting on their shelves for a while, because it looks identical to MHPhoto's "first edition" pics. Well, I was up there again this last weekend, and I noticed that they had one last bottle on display. It was the display bottle, I think (it's not shrink-wrapped in the box), and looks like it was the same first edition (kinda gummy, took forever to shake up, etc).

 

So, if you're in SLC, UT and you want some first edition 1670, check out Tabula Rasa at Trolley Square.

Let me say that I've used the 1st and 4th versions a lot. The 4th version is my favorite for an EDC. It doesn't clog and it sheens beautifully. That being said, if you are in SLC, pick up version 1.

This is my conundrum with this ink. I have 49mL of version 1 left. I don't use it, because the role I want to use it for isn't well-suited to an ink that behaves as v1 does. But it's -glorious-.

 

So it sits on my shelf, waiting for the day I realize I should sell it off to someone who will appreciate it more.

And next to it sits an occasional-use pen, wishing for a fill.

So I just picked up a bottle of V4. My original bottle of RH is V1 and it was one of the first to hit these shores being a preorder from Goulet. The bottle had very little sheen particles in it if any. Fantastic ink, so beautiful. Sheen? Not so much.

 

I watched in amusement the comings and goings of various versions. After the arrival of Emerald of Chivor, which has lots of particles and sheens like crazy I also picked up RH V4.

 

Once again, my bottle of RH (V4) seems to have less sheening particles than other folks get, and much less than my bottle of Emerald of Chivor. It has some, however, and does give that sheen we've come to expect.

 

Two bits of trouble. First, V4 of the ink is much uglier than V1. Less saturated, browner, thinner. No pop. Blah. To a camera it is a subtle difference but to the eye it is not. Second, after reading many reviews of the various versions the only conclusion is that RH differs from batch to batch and bottle to bottle. So all this comparison of versions is pointless. Theoretically, only Herbin could point out all the differences from version to version, but it seems their quality control is poor so probably they cannot tell us exactly.

 

Thus, if you get a bottle you like, love it until it's gone and then hope to get a bottle half as good.

 

Now am so wondering about my unopened bottle of V1 from the original shipment.

I think you are correct, and I am a fan of actually using your inks - so use the ink and enjoy it.

I tried to get a bottle of V4 and didn't success yet. But I got a bottle of V2 : I can't see any differences between V1 and V2. Both are beautiful and shiny.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but is there any way to work out which version you might be buying from the bottle or the box? This is just in case you happen to buy one on eBay and don't know which one it could be from one grainy picture.

 

I would love to try and find V1 to compare with V4, and it's very easy to get V4 but is V1 now completely impossible?

I don‘t think it's possible from the box or bottle. I have 2 different versions and the boxes and bottles are exactly the same.

If you could request a pic of the bottom of the bottom from the seller you might. If the seller is worth anything, they'll do that for you.

 

As in my original post, if it's the first gen version, the sediment will appear a very flat, slightly whitish pale pink. If it's the newest version (that I'm familiar with, version 4), it'll be very much gold with a glittery, coppery tinge.

Is there an update to this ink now in 2020 ? i have some versions of the original.... I think. lol

there is some sediment at the bottoms. Then i have one bottle where there is NO sediment.

 

i dont think i was ever able to buy a bottle of the original.... but i tried. over a period of time I bought 6 bottles back in 2014 hoping i would

get a bottle of the original. I dont think i did. there is some sediment..... but not alot.

 

so now i have ALOT of red ink. Thats OK... i'll use it. BUT.... would have liked to have gotten at least ONE bottle of the original.

my bad luck.

 

nobody i got the ink from would take the clear wrapping off to look at the bottom of the bottles.

i understand that but still.... i was hoping for good luck on that anyway.

Hmmm. I'm now wondering which version I have. I have one of the older versions with the larger flakes of gold, rather than the dust of later versions (and later version of Bleu Ocean, which originally didn't have any shimmer to it). I don't think I got one of the original bottles -- I got the impression that it was supposed to be a LE ink at first, and I had trouble finding it in stock (this would have been about 6 or 7 years ago at this point).

Because of the larger flakes, I limit the ink's use to a cheap Chinese pen with a fude nib, but I was surprised when I tried it (mostly to see what the fuss was about) just how much I actually liked the underlying ink color: while I don't tend to like "blood red" inks, this (or at least mine) is more of a brick red.
