BBC Article: The fascination with fountain pens, 10 Dec. 2014

Interesting article from the Mainstream Media (BBC in this case), dated today (my post-time) 10 Dec. 2014. I just toss this out for your perusal - hope it isn't a double post.

Same problem; I don't know if it's the same article but there's one from 2012 on the (UK!) BBC site, which is interesting even if it isn't the same one:

Update: I got the article in Opera on my iPad. It isn't the same one!

The BBC, in it's continuing effort to prevent human beings from actually viewing their taxpayer-subsidized content - moved the article. Here's the new link, until they decide to move it again...

I am able to view the article outside the UK even though I am in S.E. Asia. I'm waiting for the BBC to put a stop to that. I cannot fathom why the BBC would prevent people inside the UK from viewing the article. In-fact the taxpayers inside the UK paid in large-part for the article. But I put nothing past the BBC's stupidity when it comes to draconian content control.

They say this is a bbc international article and therefore funded by advertisers, not the license payers. We don't have any advertisements on the bbc television channels nor on their website.

Scritch comes from screech to give forth a harsh shrill and sudden cry. Found that in Chambers English dictionary. The journalist's attempt to describe the sound of a pen writing across a page.

I had seen this article a little earlier, linked from another forum, and wondered why the euro prices were translated into dollars rather than pounds. I suppose the fact that it's BBC international explains that.

 

It's an interesting read, in its way. By concentrating on people who amass very large and very expensive collections, it underplays the role of the fountain pen for people who just want a better way to put ink on paper. Still, you can't expect one article to cover everything. I think, though, that there's a tendency in any niche interest group to feel flattered when the mainstream media takes brief notice of them. Somebody needed filler material and thought this would be interesting. The next day it will be stamp collecting or croquet.
