You’re lucky you still get a real newspaper not the online version! :)

This is a recent special edition LAMY Studio Black Forest I received today from Goulet Pens. I paired it with a new bottle of LAMY Peridot ink ($16). The pen is satisfying in many respects. I like the finish, the weight, the balance, the clip, and all that jazz. The pen even came with a cartridge converter, which isn't always the case (but should be.) The price is no surprise at about $80. The only disappointment was the Medium nib. I'm sorry to report that someone missed testing this one. It was beyond scratchy. Felt like it was shredding the surface of the common legal pad I was using. Cheap paper shouldn't matter. I had to spend 20 minutes or more smoothing the nib and aligning the tines. It's always disappointing to know that some of my $4 pens have smoother, more consistent nibs than the pens that I expect to be higher quality. After a bit of refinement, the pen performs beautifully. Anyone else find that LAMY nibs are inconsistent? I don't think the consumer should be in charge of quality control.

Lovely pen from the picture. Just one question: what does the color look like in real life? All of the descriptions I hear are that it is green, but in the photos I see, it looks grey or black. Is the green that subtle?

I have a number of Lamy pens, and I find the steel nibs vary quite a bit in the amount of feedback, but I have been fortunate in that I have never experienced one quite as scratchy as described above. I agree, the pen should be at least reasonably comfortable on almost any paper surface.

I've found Lamy nibs highly inconsistent.

I'm writing with a Lamy 2000 with Broad nib right now using Sailor Black ink.

Part of the Lamy quirky/annoying charm.

Involving the customer for nib QC, is Lamy's customer engagement process. :D

Why? If I may ask.

It is a limited edition Safari.  It's a nice looking pen, and I would like to say nice writing as well.  Unfortunately cartridges and converters won't stay in place, and the ink supply is erratic.  For that reason, it remains unloved.  I had thought that I could purchase another Safari and try it, but why?  It has been suggested that I send it in for repair, but I expect the t'o and fro' postage would approach what I paid for the pen in the first place.

Does Lamy not cover the cost of postage?

In fairness, I think a lot of people might not even bother/care about the inconsistency, as, for the most part, they all "work" in some fashion or another. It's only when you've been exposed to much more expensive and/or more consistent productions that you start to notice the tiny little things. I think that's kind of the curse of experience: you can't appreciate some things the way that others can anymore.

Sheer perfection out of the box EDC now that I'm back commuting to the office:

  • Lamy Aion (M)
  • Lamy Aion (EF)
  • Lamy Studio (EF)

I have no clue, and to be honest, I'm not particularly motivated to even find out.

True, an unfortunate disease prevalent among pen enthusiasts/hobbyists.  :D

OTOH, ignorance is bliss as the vast majority do not succumb to the rabbit hole.

Sorry to hear that.

If you bought it locally, the retailer can help else it isn't worth the hassle/cost to send it to Lamy.

I would still take it to the local retailer to try another converter and see if you can get a better seal.

If not, then it would point to feed damage/QC issue.

OTOH, do give Lamy another shot, should you come across it on discount/clearance locally as you can test it prior to purchase.
