I just received the Lamy studio last night. For now I'm using the ink cartridge until I learn how to use the converter. It writes amazing compared to what I'm used to. I don't know a whole lot about fountain pens but I'm happy with it.

Mine is medium and the nib is very smooth as well. It is a bit to heavy for prolonged writing but as I said, I just love the design.

It's heavy, but the weight is in the front. So you don't need to press at all, the pen's own weight presses the nib onto the paper. Just let the pen lie in the web of your thumb and let the fingers just guide the pen. Writing should be done with the arm muscles anyway, not with the fingers.

That way you won't feel the weight.

Here's one that I recently rescued from deep storage. It had not been well for a long time. I managed to revive it, and also do a franken nib swap. I'm sure I'm not the first person to have done it. This is really enjoyable pen except that with the way I hold the pen, my thumb has to rest right on the clip.

2 Lamy Al Stars--Copper orange with a fine nib and filled with Autumn Oak ink, and a dark blue beauty with a 1.1 mm italic nib and filled with Bleu Ocean ink. I love them both.

 

I don't have any other Lamy models. I never really cared for the looks of any of the Safaris/Al Stars, but once I wrote with my first one, I became a convert :-). I'm going to research some of the other models you guys have mentioned, and see whether I like their looks, as well as reviews--especially those that compare them with the Al Star model.
