Been playing with my new ink, Bob Oster's Burned Orange, trying to find the right nibs and papers etc. As a dip pen ink it's spectacular, but I haven't matched that amazing range with any fountain pen yet. Maybe once a fude becomes available?

Oh, this one doesn't work with my scanner at all, so phone photo's on a gloomy day is what we have.

It's amazing the difference in some inks from a dip pen and a fountain pen. Ive had more than one bitter disappointment from inks bought on the back of dip pen reviews that are dull or entirely different when used with a fountain pen.

...but some inks sure are pretty from a dip pen...

Oops, I got the "O" bug!
I have been enjoying Oster's "Burned Orange" enough (I found a broad, wet nib, that presents it well) that I was tempted to loop back and pick up a set of Oster samples . . . . . or, heck, just pick up a bottle of "Orange Rumble" as that's the one that actually appeals to me! "Zest", "Red Orange" "Terracotta" "Tangerine" - less so!

Yay! "Orange Rumble" is not just a paler version of "Burned", but a nice pumpkin orange!

. . . but "in order to qualify for free postage" I threw in a box of Graf von Faber-Castell Burned Orange too, although that didn't look so interesting by the reviews on here, ignored it for a while, but then yesterday popped a cartridge into one of my "spare" pens - and I really like it! It's more of a red-orange that I wasn't initially attracted by (some pretty nice reviews out there of Oster's "Orange Zest") - but the shading and contrast to my other orange inks is quite lovely!

^^ errant, thanks for the Levenger Blazing Sunset sample. I'd noticed it on their website but hadn't seen any examples. Very nice color.

How would you say it looks on the page? Fireball is a nice color but just looks flat and lifeless on the page. (Pinkly!, on the other hand ...)

Scanner can't grasp Orange at all, so here's a phone pic.

Cartridges are a convenient sampling system , but they do limit the range of nibs and tests that can be applied . Both Kaweco Sunrise, which looks glorious in a previous post here, but "meh", or even dirty, in a cheap 'M' nib, and Graf von FC Burned Orange, which looks surprisingly glorious in that same 'M', I can't get more than a taste of!
Orange blobs are a small paintbrush (narrow enough to fit into a cartridge!), four out of the five have samples with the same dip-pen for fair comps.

Amberlea, I think I remember that you are a "brighter the better" fan? If so Oster's Orange Zest is the brightest Rorange I have yet seen (his Red Orange is quite subdued by comparison). Unfortunately it doesn't respond to cameras and scanners with the same ferocity as human eyeballs - the experience of "searing color" might be reserved for organic systems?

I have been going through another orange phase. It's a hard one to get right! One discovery that has surprised me is that orange inks as a group really benefit from a wetter pen; tested in a dip pen they look glorious, then load them up in a regular "m" nail and the anemic quality is really offputting. I have ended up resigning to using orange inks in fude or flex nibs only, but I haven't got over being frustrated by that!

Unfortunately, another discovery is that oranges seem particularly challenging to photograph or scan, which makes the topic a tricky one!

Anyway, I have added two oranges to my "these are my inks!" inner circle: Oster's Burned Orange, which is a fairly unique rust color (not necessarily pleasant, but looks great in contrast with my beloved olive and army greens), and Taccia Koiame, a glorious red fox in my wettest nibs; but both of these are reduced to an anaemic terracotta in a regular pen. Oy!

Moral of the story: Do not assume that, just because a particular fountain pen model could easily accommodate a Pilot Parallel pen's nib, the combination will work well, never mind the operational advantages such as better portability and greater ink capacity that the frankenpen could offer compared to a Pilot Parallel pen.

I loved Osters Burned Orange swatch I made on Tomoe River S. I have been using it on my Parker 75 Cisel Sterling with an 18k broad nib. But I find it dry? Would that be due to the nib or the ink being dryer?
