Indigo - De Atramentis

De Atramentis is german manufacturer of calligraphy and writing ink. The inks are hand made (the entire production process is done manually in their manufacturing center) by i's founder - Dr. Franz-Josef Jensen. I believe he uses high quality dyes from well established European companies like BASF and Bayer.

De Atramentis offers a variety of "traditional" fountain pen inks and a broad selection of special and scented inks. I believe they should get more attention as the quality od these fluids is very good and some colors are simply stunning.

Indigo is nice, deep blue.

What a luxurious looking blue! How on earth do you take the images on the kitchen towel to make them so clear! Love the shading.

Hah! Certainly not. I always (well almost always) warn him when I'm making an ink order.

Yesterday I ordered some amber glass bottles with the polyseal black caps in a couple of different sizes and a couple of the 4 oz. ones with eyedropper caps (which the nice people at the container company threw in as "samples" -- even though I was perfectly willing to pay for them). I already have UPS tracking info for the order, which should -- in theory -- come late Monday afternoon or early evening.

Once I get them and wash (and maybe even sterilize them), I can decant a couple of large bottles of vintage ink into managable size containers so I can finally USE them.

I've had the never-been-opened 8 oz. bottle of vintage Quink Violet for a couple of YEARS now :wallbash: but have been afraid to open it -- it has a rubber stopper with a wick down into the ink, but not any sort of pouring spout, and I wasn't sure that once I got the rubber stopper out, I'd never get it back in safely (not to mention the mess of the ink covered wick). The 2/3-3/4 full 16 oz. bottle of Skrip Peacock Blue is just sort of an unwieldy size.... and a LOT of ink. And took about 2 days to get off my hands, just from randomly handling it, and trying to unscrew the cap.

The 4 oz. bottles with the black caps will be backups. The eyedropper bottles will be for more current use, probably to transfer into the 2 oz. bottle for actual pen refilling purposes.

Vis, I'm with you on the DeA inks, I'm becoming a bigger fan the more of them that I review.

I love this ink and your review reminded me that my supply is getting very low! Thanks for the review.

Love that blue. I almost ordered it, but ordered Diamine Sargasso Sea instead. Looks like I will be getting DeA Indigo as well. Great review.

I enjoy MB 146 pens, Sailor, Pilot and Platinum pens as well. I have a strong attraction to dark red and muted green ink, colors I dislike for everything but FP ink. I also enjoy practicing my handwriting and attempting to improve it. I love the feel of quality paper under a gold nib.

  • 7 months later...

I was disappointed with this one. Too much green... it reminded me of Legal Lapis. (I still have the bottle of Lapis; it is 5-6 years old, gathering dust in a drawer.)

Interesting. I was catching up on this thread and skimming through the listings the photos from the review made me think of Noodler's Ottoman Azure; I have that in a pen at the moment, and haven't been able to make up my mind about whether I like the color of it well enough to get a full bottle or not.... It would be less expensive than Indigo, but might not be as well behaved (I've tended to like most of the De Atramentis inks I've tried.
