Small Stub Lovers Unite

Do any companies make small stubs or is it necessary to get them ground?

Pilot offers stub nibs in their higher-end FPs like the CH 912. Not sure what width it has but I think should be fairly fine. I like vtg Pelikan nibs like oblique nibs and they provide slight line variation. I have a .4mm stub for my m205 by Mr. Binder and it's very neat.

"dneal", who did the work on the Kaweco? Seems to be some flex in that nib.

I ground both of those pens. The Kaweco has a Bock #5 nib,, and it is a little springy with a bit of flex. I wouldn't go so far as to call it semi-flex though.

It looks very interesting do you have any pre-ground FPs for sale with your stubs? Thanks.

I'll take that as a compliment, but I'm not in the "nibmeister" business. I just enjoy tweaking my pens.

Oh well thanks for the reply anyways :)

I recently bought a Waterman 52 with a lovely stub nib; I use Diamine Asa Blue, because the line is broad enough to take a color, and I normally hate colored ink.

After months of waiting for it to be first turned and then have the nib re-shaped into a fine stub, I finally took delivery of this beauty ...

Its a Custom order from SCRIPTORIUM PENS , one of our FPNers :)

Its a Custom Urushi Red Acrylic in a NAKAYA Naka-Ai fit and dimensions .

I was given a choice as to the girth of the section, either small or large.

I chose a small girth.

Wonderful pen shape ...

Great job by Renee of Scriptorium pens.

Without hesitation, I fllled it with DIAMINE Oxblood.

The hue of the ink is practically exactly the same as the Urushi Red.

The <F> steel nib was reshaped into a narrow stub by Pendleton Brown , another FPNer.

Excelent job.

The stub nib strokewidth is no more than 0.5mm wide.

A closer view of the written note ...

On 5mm grids.

I particularly like the flush cap and barrel design.

Taken with +1stop over-exposure

to show off the beautiful red..

The shoulder of the barrel didnt get in the way of the grip, much to my relief.

I love my Pendleton BLS in Fine (TWSBI Mini -- see my picture for Pendleton's flourish). Now that I have a small stub, I want more!

That's a lovely looking pen! A nice homage to the Nakaya, and a lovely colour too. Do you mind me asking how much it cost?

I recently used your writing samples to figure out what size nib I wanted on my first custom made pen. I put your writing samples into Adobe Illustrator and played around with my wacom graphics tablet and traced your samples using illustrators calligraphic pen tool until I got some nice line variation. I ended up deciding on a 0.4mm CI/Stub (probably somewhere in between the two in terms of line variation) and went for a 0.8mm stub too, cos I wanted something a little broader for writing letters. My cursive handwriting is terrible as I normally print caps, so if I ever write letters I need a broad nib and big handwriting to make it even close to being legible! :)

Anyway, thanks for posting your samples, they helped me a lot.

Icy weather has closed my office, preventing me from taking delivery of a package of four pens from Pendleton Brown. I blame Global Warming.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

The smallest stub/CI pen that I have is a Lamy 1.1 nib. I would like a smaller one that would not take up so much room to write with, maybe 0.6 to 0.8mm, but with the line variation of a nice CI nib, so that I can see the line variation 'effect' of the CI nib.

The Nemosine's have enough bad reviews that I'm not keen on getting one only for the nib, knowing that the cap and body will likely have a limited life.

I'd go with a .8 mm+ CI as they have more noticeable line variation than stubs. Pilot Plumix/Pilot 78G comes with a nice CI which they sell as B nib for some reason for $10. Their nibs are interchangeable and can fit the Metro and Prera pens too.

Sheaffer No-Nonsense calligraphy sets are approx $20 and have sizes F, M, and B with C/C systems. I'd go with the transparent sets as the newer ones don't do so well. Pilot Parallel sets offer italic nib units too but they are not for everyday writing.

Sure you can :)

Here's some of my writing with "your" pens... The 22 and 45 degrees represent the angle at which the pen was "held" at in use to see the effect on the variation (with my normal handwriting I hold my pen between these angles).

I have always gravitated towards the broad stubs; however, I was fortunate to purchase a chased Sheaffer Connaisseur that came with a medium nib, and when Mr Binder was still doing customizations, I had him grind it to a fine cursive italic and boy is it sweet to write with...Changed my views for sure

Hello-just curious, would you post a writing sample?

Thanks in advance.
