Miz Black Crow Is Human (We're Pretty Sure), And Thanks You

Hi everybody! I'm Miz Black Crow, and I'm here to talk pens.

I'm a writer. Perhaps not by trade--I've never been paid for a word--but I'm getting there. I recently penned my first novel on a wifi-less Macbook. And that felt really good.

But it didn't feel AS GOOD as the work I've done in a journal with a ballpoint, or a gel roller, or.

And so as a thank-you / congratulations / pity gift to myself, I decided I wanted a fountain pen. I'm not particular about notebooks--I default to college-ruled composition notebooks--but I've always been particular about pens. Parker Jotter ball-points and Pilot F-301s were the high point of my week.

So I bought a fountain pen, a Pilot Metropolitan, and a jar of beautiful, gorgeous ink that paints my soul in gray-green-blue ( Noodler's 54th Massachusetts). I love the history of the ink. I love the feel of the pen.

And these tools, that I now scribble with in my cheap composition book (housed in a leather cover that was a gift from a loving family member), were recommendations I picked up from the FPN. You as a community guided me to find beautiful things that feel good in my hand, look good on my page, that make me feel like a Real Bona-Fide WriterTM.

Yes, the tools matter. My stories are better when I write them by hand.

So Thank You, FPN. You are all beautiful people with beautiful pens and beautiful inks. Your advice has guided me and made me happy. I can only hope that at some point I can give back.

Wonderful, nice words ~ hope we get to buy a book from you someday :)

Indeed, Noodler's 54th is a very interesting color; a nice review was posted here on FPN ~

To all, your words are kind and wondrous. I can only hope to contribute as much as people here have already contributed for me. I spent hours this week lost in the ink reviews alone! So.. Many... Shinies...

Stevesurf, mhphoto's illustrious and gorrrgeous reviews were the ones that prompted me to choose 54th Mass as my first ink buy; I sent him a personal thank-you note as well. Thanks for the catch!

Hello and welcome. I like composition books too and get mine at Staples but not in Queens. I did however grow up in Queens - Richmond Hill to be exact.

I also really like 54th MA -- even though I thought I wouldn't. I have found, though, that batches are variable. The sample I got was darker and more teal toned than the full bottle, which is quite a bit bluer (and, IMO, even better).

I was somewhat like you -- I started journaling a few years ago, and decided that a "nice" pen would help me want to do it every day until I got in the habit. I went through a couple of cheap Parker cartridge pens. Dunno the model name -- they were the ones with the rubberized grip -- which tended to disintegrate after awhile. So I upgraded to a Parker Vector with a fine nib. I accidentally left the pen and then current journal at my brother-in-law's about 3 years ago, and until I got it back tried writing with BPs and it just wasn't the same.... In the hunt to find a replacement, I eventually found my way here and have been a happy member ever since. Okay, my *wallet* has not been so happy, and my husband is now to the point of rolling his eyes and muttering under his breath about the number of pens and inks I have.

By the way -- you may have noticed that we are *all* enablers.... And will happily help you spend any available discretionary funds on our personal favorite pens, inks, paper, etc. I myself have become a sucker for vintage pens....

Welcome to the party. I hope you get published soon, soon, soon. I've read many writer's biographies and know that being a disciplined writer with a superior work ethic will pay off in time. Hang in there.
