Yard-O-Led Nib Unit

Firstly, I know I made a huge mistake/boo boo...am daft, etc. insert word if choice. Trust me, Ive used them all, and then some.

I bought this:

"The plain version of the Viceroy style. Purchased in 1988. The nib is a medium point and the original. On the pen cap there is a tiny dent, barely visible. Pen number 4635 YOL 925 . Hallmarked. Wooden box and YOD guarantee"

When I got it, it wouldn't write...I tried soaking, gently(no chemicals whatsoever, not even Fairy) patience, multiple flushing s etc. still wouldn't write.

Long story short, contacted seller, who was adamant it wrote when he sold it, and he thought I may have damaged it in my attempts to fix. He offered a return, but conditional on him sending it to a repairer(and I had no way of knowing whethervId be named/charged for repair etc)

Got myself so upset( lot of life stuff going on, recently widowed, am very fragile right now, can cope with very little) and wondering if I had in fact damaged it, that I closed the eBay case and Sid I'd get it fixed myself. I know that sounds stupid, buI really couldn't cope with the hassle.

So.

Asked my friendly penman if he'd look at it, explained it all, upshot is that it has a crack; this is what he said(and he also said that there was very little chance that I had done the damage):

"have just taken a good look at the forward part of the section, and there is definitely a spiral shaped crack in it that extends for about 5 or 6 mm. As such, you are unlikely to ever get a decent ink flow from the nib. You would need a replacement section. Your pen is quite an old model, and YOL no longer make sections of this type, so i don't really know where you'd get one from. "

Does anyone have any suggestions(other than trying to contact the seller on eBay....already did, no response, and as I was stupid enough to close the vase, he is in the right)

Is there any other nib unit which would fit, or anywhere I could get a replacement without spending a fortune?

Hope this makes sense....

Alex

Contact Yard o Led. A few years back I sent a well-used standard size to them for repair that had a horrendous leak from one of the black sections they no longer make. They gave me a brand new nib & silver section at no cost under the lifetime warranty and shipped it back. Assuming they may do the same for you if you don't mind changing the whole nib/section unit. All it cost me was postage to File-o- Fax, their distributor here in the States. Awesome company!

Ghost Plane, that sounds wonderful.....though as Im not the original owner, would they still do that?( embarrassed to admit a stupid eBay purchase....too long to explain: caveat emptor and all that; not possible to return it now, to the seller, and in any case, for what it is, it would still be a bargain even if I had to pay a bit....)

I have a similar issue - Bought a lovely vintage (20-30 yrs old, maybe older) sterling yard o led fountain pen from eBay - it's been great for about a year but just recently the casing around the grip area must have come loose because now it's lodged inside the cap and it does not want to come out. Any ideas on repair? I didn't see a reference for Yard O Led repair in the US, and given that it's an older item I am not sure how to proceed. Thank you so much for any advice/suggestions.

Yes if you could provide address / contact info I would appreciate it. I'm going to try to take to a store that sells yard o led and see if they can assist with a repair as well. Thank you!!!!

US you send it in to FiloFax. They do any forwarding from there. Google Yard o Led and File o Fax (know I'm misspelling that). The address should be pinned somewhere here on the board if you do a search.

Excellent news on the Yard-o-led front.....I posted it to the address novel, with a letter explaining thatI was not the original owner(might seem silly, but D much rather be honest and upfront) Yesterday I received, by guaranteed next day signed for delivery, the pen, complete with new nib and unit, and also minus the slight 'ding' in the cap. Looked like new.

Am amazed at the wonderfulness(made up word but best I can think of) of this.

Thanks to all the folks here for the help and advice

That sort of service helps make Y-O-L pens worth their cost - notwithstanding they are great pens, of course.

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

A search for the problem I'm having with a YOL brought me to this. Is Filofax still the primary supplier of YOL in the US, and would they be my first contact?

History/issue: I have a Victorian Viceroy Standard purchased several months ago from a vendor you are all familiar with and who has an excellent rep. Upon receipt, I had to run water through it many times to clear it of residual green-ish ink (surprised by that). After air-drying, I loaded it with Doyou and enjoyed the YOL writing experience immensely!! Cleaned it easily with several rinses of water, air-dried it, placed it back in the YOL box and stored it. Yesterday, I wanted to rotate it back in, so I loaded it with Noodler's Blue. As soon as I lifted it from the bottle, the converter began to drain through the nib back into the bottle. dripdripdripdripdrip ..... In less than 20 seconds it was empty! Rinsed, examined the nib - it appeared properly seated. Gave it a little push inward to be sure. No give. Then i pushed on the back of the converter. It felt properly seated as well with no leak. Repeated the fill. The draining commenced. Rinsed, ran water through. Interestingly, twice it held water in the converter and twice it all leaked out just like the ink. I tried a Diamine ink next - Aqua Blue. It dripped out immediately, too, through the nib.

Thank you for your HELP!

Try a different converter, any std international one will work. Use water.

If the dripping persists the issue is with the nib unit, most probably a crack somewhere.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 22:48
@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

    • bhavini 15 Apr 18:28
What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03
Hello @Jeffrey Sher, pen club information can be found in the Pen Clubs, Meetings, and Events sub forum. If you use Google site search you can find information specific to Israel.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33
      Guess who loses
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

    • lamarax 2 Mar 20:38
Oh well. In case of failure you can always wring the paper to have a nice -albeit somewhat stale- cup of coffee back.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@lamarax That's what I used! (In reply to black coffee).. But the milk might not be good at all for paper.

    • lamarax 17 Feb 18:05
Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.
    • Astronymus 17 Feb 16:19
YOu might need to thicken the coffee with something. I admit I have no idea with what. But I'm pretty sure it would work.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
