Thanks! I think that King Philip could be a fairly close match to YB. I miss your old avatar... Now I need some time to figure out who's who

Let's try this one. Better? ;)

As promised, the red-violets. Here's the range of cards I have for the colors I have, from lighter and redder, to darker and more violet:

fpn_1484583699__red_violets-cards.jpg

Doppelgänger Alert! Monteverde Purple and S&K Orchideen Violett are almost identical, and Solferino and Cactus Fruit Eel are as well!

As for Yama-budo and Solferino, the differences are pretty clear: Yama-budo has much more red to it as a base, while Solferino is more violet. I wish that I had King Philip's Requiem to compare, but sadly, it's not in my inventory... ;)

My main point was that if people liked the colors and the inks —and not just the bottles— enough to pay the Akkerman price, then they shouldn't feel foolish and get what they like. But perhaps my tone was too harsh. Sorry.

As a shameless ink libertine and hedonist, I could not agree more. :)

The previous one was very nice, but this stands out better! Thanks for the comparison as well ;) Solferino is often suggested as a replacement for YB, but now I see clearly that they are not that close! Thankfully I managed to grab a bottle of YB for 12$, so I don't really need a doppelgaenger. I'm not sure if it's my colour, though. It is pinkish (I am not a fan of pink) and at the same time lacks that 'punch' that is characteristic of Solferino. Maybe I need some time to get used to it.

Why am i NOT aware of Oster Mellow Tea ? !!!

(lovely combo)

Because it may be a very new addition to the lineup? I didn't know about it until I went to Vanness to order a "Dutch Masters" Akkerman & "just in case I ran thru my usual suspects," while awaiting placement of my order....AND there it WAS! When I asked "one of those nice Folks @ Vanness" about it, they said it was "new to them & had JUST arrived."

Whenever it was created, it is surely another great ink from a maker that continues to offer some wonderful choices @ affordable prices & I am grateful to them!

Very simple. Mr Oster creates new inks faster than we can keep up....

To bring this thread back to its topic, look at Solferino and DA Magenta Red without particles:

I love KPR. I found Solferino to be a bit more blue. KPR is also water resistant. Alas both fade. Because I adore these magenta colors, I will be using them up before I give up inking.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

This is awesome! (As for KPR, ask Sinistral1 if she still has any form the last swinky-swap).

I was impressed by the Robert Oster Signature Inks, so I ordered a few more (what the heck, right?). I haven't played with them enough yet to get a better sense of them, but I just wanted to share the color range, in case anyone was looking at these particular inks.

The first is somewhat of a disappointment —at least at first glance. The intriguingly named "NG Special '16" is almost identical to Noodler's Apache Sunset:

fpn_1484846642__apache_sunset_vs_ng_spec

I thought it would be similar, but I didn't expect it to be an almost perfect duplication.

Next, BRONZE. I was hoping for something more brown, but it reads as mostly green. A very, very close sibling to Sailor's Cigar:

fpn_1484846627__bronze_vs_cigar.jpg

And finally, VIOLA. Very light, and in the same color range as J. Herbin's Poussière de Lune:

fpn_1484846593__viola_vs_poussiere_de_lu

For comparison, I threw in my color card for a mix of de Atramentis Heather Violet blended with J. Herbin's Stormy Gray.

Hope this is helpful!

Oh, and one more new ink (for me): de Atramentis Violet (scented). Very rich, deep color, and a really appealing scent. It's closest color family member in my collection is Private Reserve's DC Super Violet:

Does the scent of the De Atramentis really smell like violets? Some of their scented inks smell good (Red Roses is glorious), some are sort of meh (Lavender didn't smell like much of anything, although admittedly it was just a sample) and some are just, well, weird (Patchouli was awful -- sort of musty smelling and not like patchouli at all).

To me, a really nice violet scent. But like color, scent is in the eye (nose?) of the beholder. I love the scent of deA Patchouli, for example, but cringe at the scent of their Lilac... Sense perception is a funny thing, isn't it?

Some Akkerman/Diamine Doppelgangers......

Allow me to follow this up with a side-by-side "review" of the inks. I'm not the best at reviewing or photography, but I tried to show the chromatography and the effects of water, at the least. I am prepared to swear that these inks are identical.

In the bottle:

For those looking for a Mb Leonardo Red Chalk look-alike, here's another option.

Wow, what a find, thank you! Just when I was thinking I'd found all the inks I needed. Oh well.
