Nakaya Dorsal Fin V1 Kuro-Tamenuri

Some pics below of my new Nakaya Dorsal Fin v1 in Kuro-Tamenuri. Writing uses Iroshizuku Yama-Guri on Rhodia paper. I got a medium nib, tuned for medium flow and light pressure by a right-hander. Many thanks to the folks at nibs.com for their service.

I love this pen. It's bigger than I usually use, but I fell for the Dorsal Fin design, and the pen is light and well-balanced so I don't feel like I'm writing with a pen designed for "heft". (If heft/weight = quality for you, this is not the right brand.)

The fin does keep the pen from rolling, but not as much as a clip would, so I am still careful where I put it.

The nib is perfect for me, exactly the right line width and flow, and very smooth.

Great looking pen! That is one of my favorite Nakaya finishes. Is there a dorsal fin v2? What's the difference? Good to know that the nib fits your preferences perfectly!

Beautiful pen! Is just the angle of the picture or does only the bottom have that pointed end like that found on the Piccolo and Naka-ai? From the picture it looks like the top of the pen is flatter and the bottom has that peaked end.

I love the pen. While out of my price range at the moment, I can see a day come when I am willing to spend out for a bespoke pen like this. However, one thing bothers me. All the Nakayas I've seen are cartridge/converters. Are there no piston fillers or other options?

I don't much like converters but I can put up with them on cheap pens. For $500-1500 though, I'd expect a better option. It just seems to me that past the $200 mark, pen companies can do without my cartridge dollars.

beautiful pen! i must be one of the rare person around to prefer converters than anything else. they are just much easier to clean and maintain if you like to change inks a lot!

Me to. I much prefer converters and consider it a plus for the Nakaya pens.

For OP: Thats a stunning pen. I really like that particular model. I don't think i can convince myself to buy that myself, but a neo standard might be heading my way this year.
