I thought the first version conveyed a too dark Blue-Black, so I did the second frame.

Diamine gets on the Organics Studio maxi-sheen bandwagon, with this new ink: Skull & Roses. This is one of their 2 new Germany-special inks. Actual colour strongly resembles Majestic Blue. Time will tell if it has the same problems with drying and smearing as Maj Blue and the OS sheening inks.

I dont have Steel Blue to compare (its on the list), but the series of Soft Mint, Marine, Steel Blue and Eau de Nil seems to be about the right color family. If youre looking for dupe information, Caran dAche Caribbean Sea was close and often people who liked it settle on the Kaweco as a good replacement. (I missed the CdA ink, so no firsthand experience)

I love that! How "Germany-special" are they? Exclusive to a specific store?

I’m aware of 2 stores in Germany that sell them. I recommend Fountain Feder. Their shipping is cheapest and reasonable. They have just announced restocks of 30ml bottles after selling out first lot. I suspect latest lot will sell out quickly too. Don’t seem to have restocked 80ml bottles yet.

I’ve used the Skull & Roses for a few days. I’m not a fan. Too much sheen, and it’s smeary. Very similar to Majestic Blue. Also stained my pen and it needed a lot of cleaning to remove the stain.

Ah smeary... Not fan of that. I suppose it dries horribly slow as well?

I've ordered from Fountain Feder once. They are quite good.

Aww, thanks! I’d probably describe it as a monoline cursive italic if I’m being technical. Usually I just call it a scribble. But it’s a fairly legible scribble.

I have The Want. (I need the Alt+0153 Trademark symbol, but I *have* The Want.)

Gorgeous!

As kids, some girls wanted to be princesses. I wanted to be Morticia Addams. Or Nikola Tesla. Preferably both.

This Caran d'Ache ink is a lovely color and it's well behaved. Caran d'Ache could sell many bottles if it made this line of inks more wildly available (read: cheapter) for many writers and artists. If all the other colors are as nice and well-behaved as this, the Chromatics line would be a winner with a reduced price tag. Apologies for the short rant.

Idyllic Blue is a nice, saturated summer sky blue. It tends not to feather and it even shows minimal bleedthrough on absorbant notebook paper, though if you use a luxury ink it should goes by saying that you should invest on good paper too. It sheen a tiny bit when it pools thick, but I wouldn't add it to a "sheeny inks" list.

I really like using it since I've put it in a snap cap pen with a nicely wet nib that I take with me when I go out.

Another example to show you how saturated Idyllic Blue is. Also, you can see some of the sheen of Asa Blue even if this is just a scan, not a picture. I really like this blue.

  • 4 weeks later...

For reasons I don't remember now, I have been on a turquoise kick of late. I found it tiring wading through the 43 pages of this Blue thread, but I can also see the advantages of not multiplying threads beyond necessity. I decided to try to help other turquoise seekers by posting scans of nearly 20 different variations on turquoise, all in one place. There are (at least) two limitations. These samples were gathered over a span of decades, and many of the inks are no longer available. And both scans, done with different scanners from different manufacturers, are none too accurate.

http://statland.org/PenPix/turquoise1.jpg

My tastes run toward a light, bright turquoise, and of the above the A&W is the closest match, with the Parker a very close second. The Parker has the advantage of still being available, though only in cartridges. A&W was a distributor of office supplies from a variety of manufacturers. They sold inexpensive Reform fountain pens under their own name. I have no idea who supplied their short international ink cartridges, but it was someone in Germany.

On paper, the 5:1 mix of Thornton Turquoise and Yellow is close though a tad greener. In the scans it looks much greener. PR Daphne Blue is close on the other side -- more of a light blue than a turquoise.

Noticeably darker are the quite similar Lamy, Panache, Thornton, Eversharp, Herbin, and Diamine Turquoise. Marginally darker than those are the two very similar Sheaffer inks. Next comes the Thornton 4:1 Turquoise:Yellow mix, which the math. folks will note contains more yellow than the much lighter 5:1 mix. I think that is because Thornton Turquoise ink seems to change color in a pen, starting fairly light (as in the scan above) and gradually turning into a saturated blue-black. It isn't just a matter of evaporation creating a more concentrated hue near the tip of the nib. The ink remains dark after lots of scribbles and after forcing a couple drops through the feed into the trash. The ink does NOT seem to change color in the bottle, nor after drying. In any case, the 4:1 mix shows no sign of the green cast of the scan, while it shows a lot more shading on paper than the scan captures -- much more shading than any of the other inks here.

Pelikan Turquoise is essentially the same hue but a bit darker than the 4:1. Blue Suede is darker still. Diamine Teal and Noodler's Turquoise are less saturated with grey overtones reminiscent of blue-black inks of 50 years ago.
