Iroshizuku Ajisai?

I will second Ajisai, the lighting shows it a tad bit lighter than it is (and this is in an EF Visconti nib)

I completely forgot about Ajisai! Thanks for reminding me!! I tried a sample of it once a long time ago, and I never followed up on it. Thanks to everyone for the recommendations!

One more periwinkle-like to consider: Diamine China Blue.

Thanks for the suggestion. Got a photo of how it looks on paper? :)

Diamine China Blue. Don't be scared by the long dry times - My vintage Skyline is a flex nib that puts down ink liberally.

It does feather when used on poor-quality paper. Again, the Skyline's over-active feed might be contributing here.

Thanks for the images, ES. China Blue looks like a slightly deeper version of Diamine's Royal Blue. Does that seem right?

I don't remember how much time elapsed between writing and scanning, but China Blue goes down deep like you see in the scans, then lightens up considerably over the next day or so. What's left is a chalky light blue that does look like the color blue you see decorating china.

Here's another view of that same sample card in natural light. I just took the photo, so it's what the ink looks like after having had several months to "settle".

I made a ghost for Amber. And I figured since I actually have a blue inked Id better add it. Bottom stripe is cross hatching hit with a waterbrush. All the Kaweco inks Ive done this to before melted into a very smooth wash. This one retains a lot of line. Not the ink for skies unless youre using it in a waterbrush for a custom marker.

How do you call these decorations in English? These are exercises to practice one's own mastery of pen and pencil in the first couple of years of elementary school. I was so fond of these exercises that I was gifted a book about them one Christmas day.

Anyway, about the ink, the pen that's inked with Royal Blue has a naturally generous feed. I love using Royal Blue in it because the more saturated it is, the more I tolerate it. But it's actually more dull normally. You can find a better example in one of my previous posts in this thread, where I use a Lamy 1.5 stub nib. That's closer to the usual dull-ness of the level of this ink's saturation.

Pen: Wing Sung 3008 <Lamy Z50 F> & Lamy Al-Star.

Ink: Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue & Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black

Paper: Clairefontaine 90g/m.

Mostly Americans aren’t taught that style of thing. At least not formally, and not as part of handwriting.

Calligraphy or typography ornament, flourish, separator, doodle, border and so forth should all get the point across. I can’t remember if there’s a proper name that gets used in calligraphy textbooks. I know book typesetters have a formal name for each type of ornament that goes into a nicely typeset book, but there’s a bunch of them and the names often fall out of my head.

I don't think it's a calligraphy exercise, but mostly to teach kids how to draw straight lines and how to hold the pen/pencil properly at different angles while doing something fun and creative.

Here is a website with many examples. Sorry it's in Italian but if you click the pictures you can find many examples of such exercises.

http://www.lannaronca.it/cornicette%20e%20disegni%20a%20quadretti.htm

In Italian they're called "cornicette" which is the diminutive for the Italian word for "frame" so in English it would be something like "little frames."

Thank you for the example words, I was at a complete loss!

I forgot to ask, but if I'm supposed to post such posts in another thread or sub-forum, please tell me so. I know these Inky TODs are supposed to be for swatches, but I prefer typography or doodles.

Pen: Wing Sung 618 & Wing Sung 3008 <Lamy F>.

Ink: Diamine Havasu Turquoise & Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue.

Paper: Clairefontaine 90g/m.

As long as they show the colours of different inks, I think swatches, doodles or calligraphy practices are all welcome here. (And yours look great!)

RoyalBlue - I've meant so say that I love your contributions. I usually add ghosts, your doodles are darling!

No, it's Amber who has turned pink. Look at the new avatar...

Well if I wasn't embarrassed before.....

Anyway, let's try to recover from this social faux pas with a quick random design.

Thanks a lot for this comparison. I was thinking of buying Asa Blue, but seeing it with Pelikan Royal Blue, which I already have and use a lot, looks rather dull...I think I'll go with Iroshizuku Asa Gao !

Try putting a drop of ink on the breath hole of a pen with another ink and keep writing, and you can get an "ombré" (gradient) effect.

(No promise that there won't be an adverse reaction between inks)

Poor Asa Blue, I love the heck out of it. Superb saturation, optimal wetness (for me) and subtle sheen. (Though it doesn't spare low quality paper.) Consider browsing the last 10 or so pages to check out my other posts with this ink, or use the forum's search function.

Ooh, sounds like watercolor art, I definitely need to try this! :eureka:
