Here's an early Sheaffer stub, found on a very early Sheaffer Lifetime black hard rubber flat top with wide solid-gold cap band and 14K clip (89C, for you Sheaffer geeks):

Here's a Triumph flexible stub on a Sentinel DeLuxe :

I'm pretty sure it's original to the pen...

I've never see one labeled both stub AND flex. I have a fine stub on a Valiant II. The label reads just "Valiant. stub". The couple of flex Triumph nibs I have come across came to me on Triumphs (93 WH) but they don't have labels. The earliest Triumph stub nib I've seen was about 1.2mm on a Triumph (93 WH) without a label. I've showed it some nib meisters to see if they could identitfy it as post-production work, but all three said it was factory made. Do you know what characteristics mark a nib point as "factory-made"? Or are labels the only sure tell?

The shape of the tipping material is usually distinctive, for both the original maker (Sheaffer, in this case) and for each re-tipper. Also, masked nibs, such as Triumphs, generally show some yellow gold just aft of the tipping material on a re-tip, unless the re-tipper has taken care to also re-plate the mask. The shape of the tines also gives an indication; tines whose outer edges are not nearly parallel, or that look stunted, have probably been cut back. I see this all the time; your photo of a stubbed Triumph shows this condition.

Here's a lousy old photo of a scary, early Sheaffer Snorkel flexible stub in Palladium Silver:

Here's a few crummy photos of a nice 7-30 I've got on my hands.

...And what said nib can produce.

What is the nib on eBay 111526604988 ? And whoever bought it, don't tell me how nice it is. I made an offer, seller made a counter-offer, and I hesitated a little too long. As people say, its not the ones you bought and wish you didn't, its the ones you didn't buy but wish you had...

A little late to the discussion, but here's my Sheaffer Legacy with a stub nib!

12576763674_0ae569f458_b.jpg

Is this another one from Mauricio's stable? He said he has only a few left. I recently bought one at the old price before he raised it to $350. It's really what it is, "ultra smooth and wonderful.." as he describes it.

Definitely this is the original Legacy (I), shipped to me in a red box that says the model is 848-0, Sheaffer Legacy Sterling Fountain Pen Stub. Why is it then sporting a Legacy II/Legacy Heritage nib/section? When I saw it at Mauricio's website, I thought it is a Legacy II because of the section. I have always wanted a Legacy II and a factory stub nib. Yay, so I bought one. That's what I thought! I know that you could swap nibs between the II and the Heritage, I didn't know that these nibs could also be used with the original Legacy. Did Sheaffer modify the cap to accommodate the newer nibs?

oh man, bsenn! That is an AMAZING looking pen!!!! And S4 for $75? WOW. I am super super envious. All of mine I've gotten for less than $100 but more than $75.

It's going to take me a long time to get over missing that one! To whomever bought it, if you ever want to sell it, I'll give you twice what you paid! :P

It's a stub, note the code on the back of the nib is S4 where S=stub and 4=palladium silver triumph. The letter/s refers to the style of nib, the number the material and type. If the nib is flexible it will have a second letter F there as well ie FF4 = flexible fine palladium silver triumph , FS flexible stub etc.. apart from the obvious like F, M, B there's X =extra fine, A=accountant and G= shorthand on Snorkels when present.

Thanks. Just getting into Sheaffer's so this info helps.

Still kicking myself for not paying the seller's counteroffer right away...

Targas did come with 14K stub nibs, I have a couple of them. Unlike the steel nibs from the Targa calligraphy sets, the gold nibs do have tipping. They're more like crisp italics than what most of us think of as stubs, though they came marked with the letter S.

Here's a Targa factory stub:

I've got a writing sample around here, which I'll try to post.

I managed to snatch up a Targa Slim with 14k factory stub (and slim converter!) and it does indeed write more like an italic than a modern stub. (Un)fortunately I'm traveling for the holidays and don't have it handy to share photos of. If anyone is interested I can take a few after the new year.
