Factory Stub Nib Question

I'm afraid not very easy. I don't recall any current production Sheaffer having a stub nib. But there are many other pen companies if a nice stub is what you're after.

Are you referring to modern or current-production Sheaffers, or vintage pens?

I'm afraid not very easy. I don't recall any current production Sheaffer having a stub nib. But there are many other pen companies if a nice stub is what you're after.

 

i am looking for a vintage one, ideally a touchdown or lever filler. i know they made some snorkels labeled s5 that would have those nibs.

You will have to keep an eagle eye and pounce if you see something you want he has people waiting in the wings waiting for what they want to come up for sale.

You will have to keep an eagle eye and pounce if you see something you want he has people waiting in the wings waiting for what they want to come up for sale.

 

Greg does fantastic work, i have had him re-tip a nib for me in the past. and i have been eyeing his pens for awhile but i have never seen any that were not already sold. i am hoping to find a sheaffer factory stub though, i have heard so many people on here raving about them.

i am teaching myself programming at the moment and i have been tempted to try and write a script for fun that checks his site at regular intervals and sends an email to him automatically if his post contains the term "wet noodle" and is under a certain price.

Good advice re Greg's site. I'd also recommend a pen show - that was the only way I managed to snag a Targa with a stub.

I had a Connaisseur with a lovely Broad Sheaffer Stub ...can't recall the exact model,but it had a translucent green body (I think it had 'Sea' or 'Seas' in the name).

 

I sold it to an FHFer in Nortern Spain .... partly because I couldn't bear having a pen with a mis-spelled name

We were surprised to find one or two stub nibs in the batch of Preludes we just purchased (indirectly) from Sheaffer Australia.

I collect strange snorkel and TD nibs on triumph nibs, and i have to say that it's a really long, painful, and expensive thing to do. It is really REALLY hard to find them at reasonable prices, as they are very rare and everyone wants them. If you don't mind an open nib rather than a triumph, your odds go up ever so slightly, but they are still pretty rare on the open market. There were not as many made originally, and it seems that people don't often sell them when they get them.

ps. although everyone seems to love the S5 nibs, I've found a few S4 one that I quite love. Still stubs but PdAg instead of 14K, and they perform just as wonderfully. Having said all that, I have a few of the retipped triumph stubs from Minuskin, and they are essentially the same in terms of performance. As nice as the S5 nibs are, I'm not sure you really need to chase them if all you're interested in is performance and not collecting them, or you're not particularly into the feel of Triumph nibs in general.

It depends on what dictionary you're using. Connoisseur is the English rendition of the French Connaisseur.

Here is a 1.1mm Minuskin stub on a Triumph nib attached to a Sheaffer Valiant from about 1947.

If you don't NEED it to be a gold nib, Targa stub nibs are not terribly difficult to find. They made 3 sizes: ~0.8mm, ~1.4mm, ~1.75mm

Otherwise, your best bet for a factory stub is going to be a Touchdown or Snorkel. I just picked up another Snorkel S5 nib, and could be convinced to let it go, but it's not cheap. It's about 1.2mm.

that was my first fountain pen and i think its part of the reason why i am so curious about finding a good vintage sheaffer with a nice juicy stub.

 

the quality control is terrible on those nowadays. i have seen them with slits cut at an angle, one tine longer than the other, but i also ran across one that had a slight flex nib.
