Esterbrook Brand Being Revived This December?

$400 and it's got a silver-plated German steel nib?

It says German iridium. Chinese pens say Germany on the nib. It means the nib was tipped with iridium from Germany, not that the nib was made in Germany.

Wouldn't a silver plated nib tarnish? No company I ever heard of used silver on the nibs. It isn't a good material for this use.

And the end of all our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time. TS Eliot

Actually, Esterbrook made a Palladium Silver nib during WWII, and it did tarnish. Maybe this is going back to its roots? I suspect they mean silver colored, rather than plated. Just a poor description I suspect.

Very, very poor description if you are right. It literally says "silver plated", which would lead a consumer to believe there's actually a layer of silver on the nib!

If they truly did silver plate it, then that was a mistake in my opinion due to the aforementioned tarnishing. I understand the idea of keeping the theme of silver throughout the pen, but polished steel would have made more sense. If they are just trying to make it seem more valuable or justify the price, it's a fail in my opinion. I'd rather see a gleaming, polished 14kt gold nib honestly...

Just checked the Esterbrook vault to make sure they were all safe. All was good then they started to disappear before my eyes. I locked the door and it stopped...for now.

Wearever used them also for a bit, mine is badly tarnished despite my efforts to clean it up.

So, let me get this straight: not only is a $400 pen only available in a medium nib (nope, do not want), but said $400 pen is supposed to be paying homage to the classic pen which made its name on having every nib under the sun?? Is it just me, or is that the exact opposite of sensible?

Well...I think they're going about it the absolutely WRONG way ($400 to pay homage to what was a quality, AFFORDABLE pen???), but I wouldn't expect a new company to be able to launch with a 100% full product line. Still...I think they should've launched with a really affordable pen and at least a small choice in nibs rather than jumping straight to the expensive limited editions. I have a feeling the people who are launching this "new" Esterbrook don't really realize what the "old" Esterbrook was about. They're just marketing a familiar name.

Not necessarily the Esterbrook mothership. As I understand it, FarmBoy pushes the big red button, all the earlier Esterbrooks transport to his basement, and the new company gets blamed for it.

:lticaptd:

Would that be one of those "that was easy" buttons from Staples?

I'll just collect the original Esterbrooks (going to try to limit myself to just three!) and love them for what they are...but it's open season on the nibs, LOL!

But … but … That's not even all the basic colors!

I know, it's heresy!! But I just want a blue, red and copper SJ. None of the other colors really appeal to me. Right now, I have a blue and red SJ, and a copper LJ. I'm glad I tried an LJ, but in the end I was right--I prefer the size of the SJ's. So I'm working on a way to just trade my copper LJ for a copper SJ and then I'll be free to pursue the next pen!! Or nib, lol...

You should sic your Googler on Modern lever fill fountain pens.

There Are some of them, most LE or SE I think.

QUITE pricey. I think in that $400+ area.

Hi...who is the manufacturer of that pen? Thanks.

It says German iridium. Chinese pens say Germany on the nib. It means the nib was tipped with iridium from Germany, not that the nib was made in Germany.{/quote]

I have seen the above statement several times on FPN. I don't believe it, but I may be wrong. What factual evidence can be adduced that Chinese manufacturers buy tipping material from Germany for IPG nibs? It seems totally incredible. Any facts at all to back it up? Chinese law requires it, and is obeyed?

I feel like that's all I see on eBay lately! I've missed some really good deals too...I'm just not in a position to buy right now, but I wish I were! Saw a blue Estie with a 9668 nib go for something offensive like 20 bucks awhile back...

Well, you got a killer deal. It was worth it for the nib...I would have just restored the pen and stuck another nib I already have in it and sold it. I *will* own a 9668 nib one day! It's kind of the elusive unicorn nib for me right now. They pop up at good prices, but never when I'm in a position to buy...

I felt my question of "So these are much nicer than the original Js" was a very valid question since I could get 2 original restored ones for that price. Or a few nibs to go with one

Gotta love your questions and responses to the new company, I have bookmarked the pages for the future. I estimate hours of laughter. No joke.

I emailed: I hope you know there are lots of vintage Esterbrook fans, best not to disappoint.

I think they've already disappointed though....

I live in the greatest country in the world....Texas
