Inky T O D - Do I Have Enough Ink To Last My Lifetime?

I have four bottles. Different strokes ...........

There's no guarantee I won't expire before one of those is empty.

"Be Here Now" Remember that?

Add lightness and simplicate.

12x Diamine à 30ml

+ 1x Noodler's à 135ml

+ 2x Sailor à 50ml

+ 1x Lamy à 50ml

+ 1x Rohrer & Klingner à 50ml

= 695ml

I use about 2ml per week (average for the past 15 years). Now, I'm garbage at maths, but according to my shaky calculations, at this rate, it's going to take something north of 7 years to use it all up - provided that I don't buy any more (which I definitely would, but I have a policy to use up at least 30ml before buying a new bottle).

Well, since this thread started I have now actually finished one bottle of ink (De Atramentis Red Roses, which is a 35 ml bottle); and I'm pretty close to finishing my original bottle of Waterman Mysterious Blue (50 ml). Once the new bottle of WMB is used enough, I will either transfer the remainder of the old bottle's contents to it, or (for purposes of sanitary practice) to a sample vial (I like sample vials as mini inkwells when I'm traveling).

I think I have another bottle of Red Roses, but now that it's open I should get a backup of *it*. Of course I also want to get a full bottle of De Atramentis Aubergine while I'm at it....

Should the inkapocalypse ever happen, and I lose all my proper FP inks, I have a small stash of powdered inks, enough to make a couple of litres of dip pen ink, and enough dip pens to use up more than that.

Perhaps we all need to get a life . . .

Or start "Ink Geeks Anonymous".

I confess that I don't have that much ink (only 50-60 bottles and who knows how many samples - :yikes:), but buying ink is way too much fun. Oh yes, I have my list of pens that someday I would like to have, but my ink list is much, much longer.

I have got about 600ml of different inks (mostly Sailor Jentle, some Iro, Diamine, GvFC and Edelstein) + appx. 200ml of Pilot blue black. Should last at least 2 years.

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.
Preferably EU.

You and me both.

At this point, most of the pens I wanted I now have. I do have a wish list, but generally those are budget-breakers, like a Parker 51 in British Bloody Burgundy (I have most of the colors of 51s I want already -- although a full-size Plummer would be nice, I can be satisfied with my user-grade Demi). A lot of what I'm doing now is Bo Bo Olsen's "hunt the nib".

Unlike some people, I'm not in the hunt for, say, every size and color and generation of Vacumatics; the only "duplicates" are the two Azure Blue Pearls -- a 3rd Gen Sub-Debutante; and a Speedline filler which I haven't quite determined is a Debutante or a Slender (Slender Debutante?).

Ink is a completely different kettle of fish. Of COURSE I have a full bottle of (original formula) Black Swan in Australian Roses and a full bottle of Yama-budo -- the colors are JUST enough different.... B)

With 90 bottles and I'm in my early 60's I feel safe that I will never run out. Don't use it as much as I did back before I retired.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I showed the pix to my husband, and pointed out I don't have nearly this much ink. He said "This is NOT a competition...."

Well, I decided today I did in fact need a *bit* more ink.... I have a backup bottle of Lamy Vibrant Pink, a bottle of De Atramentis Aubergine, a sample of Robert Oster Thunderstorm, and TWO bottles of De Atramentis Red Roses probably shipping Monday or Tuesday from Goulet Pens.

Yes, I did say two bottles of Red Roses. I've gone through one bottle and am now on the backup. But that thread about peoples' favorite inks made me realize that it's one I never want to be without, and sometimes places are out of stock. Hmmm. Maybe I should also have ordered a second bottle of Aubergine as well....

I enjoy trying a new ink every so often, so I tend to acquire a number of partially-used inks. Not that I didn't like them, just that most of them don't get heavy use. Also, I use cartridges a lot for work because I can just tuck one in my pocket in case I run out, and I buy them in bulk when they're on sale. Also, I often buy a multi-color pack of Varsity's because they're cheap, write well, I like the colors, and I can give them away to kids who seem interested in fountain pens without breaking the bank. Also, I'm getting old, hence an increasingly limited life span. So yeah, I've probably got enough to last my lifetime. Won't stop me from buying more, though. Currently anticipating the arrival of a bottle of Monteverde Ruby, because I've never tried Monteverde inks and I wanted a nice, rich red.

Using some pens that gush out a lot of ink I may not have reached the "lifetime zone" yet (at least if I want to live for some 40 years from now).

In the last few years I have emptied about three bottles of ink per year (all in all ca. 120-150 ml per anno), my children (8 & 10 yo) together use about 30-50 ml (Lamy Royal Blue and Rohrer & Klingner Blau Permanent) for their school tasks.

Levelled out that's about 200 ml of ink for us.

According to my Excel-list there should be about 4800 ml (to 5000 ml max when including samples) of ink here, assuming all of the bottles are full (they are not, but I do not have a record of the level of use, only a list with all the colours, price, where i got them from, which pens they were in and the initial content).

_Which means_ I only have ink for the next 24, maybe 30 years. Since I am 37 years old I do not (want to) consider this a 'safe' lifetime supply.

Since I have over 500 bottles of ink & use abt 50 ml/yr & I will be 69 next month, I think it is safe to say that my kids will have to figure out what to do with a lot of ink.

Here's my little pen cabinet to compare:

fpn_1529263352__pen_cabinet_1_of_1.jpg

I keep my extra pens in the top drawer (those that are not inked), bottles in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th drawers, samples in the 5th and my extra journals in the bottom drawer.

But, to be truthful, all of my Pilot Iro and Stipula inks are in the bookcase across the room - they take up about 1/4 of one shelf.

I actually saw a chest of drawers or cabinet in an antiques shop a couple of days ago. It had drawers about the size of yours, but wasn't as high, and had IIRC three or four across. Not sure what it was for originally (it was too nice to be for tools, and the drawers were too deep to be for something like dental tools. And it was too many small drawers to be for clothing, unless it was something like socks.

I was kinda tempted, but I couldn't find a price, and I wasn't sure I could get it in my car. Or, for that matter, where I could put it in the house....

The one I posted is actually known as a "Lingerie Chest". My mother in law had it, but she kept her jewelry in it. And now I use it for pens and ink. It never has had lingerie in it.
