My First Esterbrook From My First Pen Meet!

Today I attended my first pen meet with fellow fountain pen enthusiasts in my area of Manila. I went home with a few bottles of ink, a Sheaffer VFM, and my very first Esterbrook.

 

 

It's a green Esterbrook J (I don't know exactly what kind of green this is). The nib is a beautiful 9968 firm broad which writes so smooth and wet.

 

 

I filled it with Diamine Meadow, a happy shade of green to fit its vibrant color. I am surprised with how smooth this pen writes, and I'm pleased that I got it at a good price (about $38).

That nib sure looks like it writes smoothly, I'll have to keep my eye out for one to try in one of my esties. I like a larger nib, fine and extra fines just don't suit my writing style.

I like that nib, and will have to keep my eyes open for one of my J-Series Esties. My black Double Jewel Estie has a 2314 B-stub, which is a very nice writer. Beautiful color Diamine ink as well. How long have you been collecting FPs?

Nice Estie. The great thing about Esties is that they are working pens. They were not as fancy, and not as finely constructed as the Parkers, Wahls and Watermans of their day, but they were simple and functional. The plastic was pretty tough (Except the black and the stuff they made the purse pens out of) and the stainless hardware didn't brass or corrode away. I have several grey ones, a few blacks and a few M-2, deluxe and safaris. When I need to grab a pen to write with, I grab my Grey "J" as often as my Parkers or Waterman. No matter how many pens you get, you will always love your Esterbrook!

Did you ask if the pen was resaced? At $38, I hope it was.

The potential problem is, if the sac is original Esterbrook, it will be a 60+ year old sac, that could fail at any time.

And that would be messy.

 

My advice, if in doubt, get the ink sac replaced.
