Nope, just an enabler.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Very nice, thank you. I'm afraid my only purple is Purple Wampum, which you don't have in your sample. Although I like the looks of Haley's Comet Blue, and also Billberry.

Hmm... we should add Purple Wampum, it's a very nice ink.

Firstly, I want to say thankyou! for this wonderful resource (now if only I can find a green and blueblack inky comparison my research for inks would be complete! ...for a few years at least  )

I just want to ask if the Black swan in english roses (that you have in one pic/swab/thingy) is that ink or is it mislabeled Black swan in australian roses? I was a bit confused...

Thank you again, Vis, for taking the time to do these. They are invaluable.

Herebelow is my attempt to restore visvamitra's pictures to this thread.

PLEASE NOTE: These pictures were created in October 2014

It is likely that some of these inks have been reformulated since that date.

ALSO: scanner technology has improved since then!

So, IF you happen to see an ink here that you like, please look for a more-recent review of it before you rush out to buy it.

I also urge you to pay attention to visvamitra's opening caveat in this post!

All credit for these scans, and for the large amount of work that went in to creating these comparisons, is owed to visvamitra.

Bon; now that I have typed all of that, here is my attempt at restoring vis' pictures to the opening post.

Enjoy!

-----

It took me some time to finish this comparison but here it is. Not flawless, not perfect, but it has plenty of colors to see.

To be honest I've never been violet fan. I always liked dark purples but disliked most of violets. It's changed with time. At the moment I'm quite keen on these hues.

I've included 60-63 inks here (the number differs on different papers, I didn't have enough samples of some inks, I've forgotten about one or two inks and haven't included them everywhere).

There are some odd-looking inks here that aren't violet/purple like KWZI Blue L51 (I just had a small sample so I included it here). Kung Te-Cheng, Potassium, Purpillusion are more blue than purple.

Alt-Bordeaux and Deepwater Obsession can be regarded as burgundy but as I'm not planning (yet) to compare burgunds / bordeaux I've included them here as well.

I need to thank Cyber6 here for A LOT of samples. You truly are Ink Smuggler Extraordinaire :)

Thank you very much for this.  This is currently my favorite color range and thanks to your [Mercian] input on another thread, I am currently inked up with KWZ IG Violet #3 and absolutely LOVE it.  Also a fan of the R&K Cassia but it leaves absolutely nothing behind after water spill/soak.

Thanks for the effort from both of you!

SUMMARY

Well many of violets / purples have grown on me with time. There’s too many inks to create poll so I’ll list my TOP 10 in alphabetical order

Aubergine - De Atramentis

Deepwater Obsession (dzięki Kasiasemba za zamówienie grupowe De Atramentis)

Imperial Purple - Diamine

Nightshade - Noodler's

Poussiere de Lune - J. Herbin

Simplisties Violet - Akkerman

Storm - Caran d'Ache

Tyrian Purple - Diamine

Violet - L'Artisan Pastellier

Yama-Budo - Pilot Iroshizuku

I dislike some of the colors, for example Violette Pensee, Toucan’s Violet, Tsutsuji. Some are boring – Purple Martin, Purple Heart but generally speaking family of violets and purples is rich in intriguing colors.

Let me know which are your favourites.

I hope that these restored pictures are useful.

Having images of so many inks in the same place, made by the same person, using the same methodology, should at least provide a very useful 'comparative' guide.

Nota bene: I do though re-iterate my initial statement from my first of these three posts - not only has scanner technology moved-on since these images were created, it is possible - nay, it is probable - that some of the inks shown in these pictures have either been reformulated, or discontinued, since visvamitra did all the work to create these comparisons.

As such, if any of the inks shown in these images appeals to you, I urge you to find some more-recent reviews of it, both to check the colour of its current formulation, and (especially) to find out about its physical properties - shading; flow-rate; feathering/show-through/bleed-through; propensity for nib-creep or to form nib-crud; difficulty of cleaning it out of a pen; its propensity to stain piston chambers/converters/skin/clothes; etc.

All credit for doing the work that was necessary to create these comparisons, and for uploading the images here, is owed to visvamitra.

Slàinte,
M.

Oh, hang on a minute, did I type that last bit 'out loud'...?

I thank you for the encouragement - but I only did a bit of simple 'admin' work (I do need to have something to keep me occupied during the long Winter nights) - it is only visvamitra to whom we owe thanks, for all the work he did to create these comparisons.

I have a number of these inks, and am a big fan of purples and violets.

Thanks for resurrecting the images, Mercian!

ETA:  Admittedly, though, some of these look more pink than purple....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Oh my God. I MUST resist obsessively lusting after so many of these inks. I'm going to fill a pen right now with yama-budo and never come back to this post. 🤯

What a huge collection of violet (and purple and magenta and fuchsia and ...) inks! Thank you, @Mercian, for resurrecting the images.

If it would make any sense, I would buy all of these inks! ;) :) 🙄

I found one deviation from my own experience: Yama-budo and R&K Magenta look very similar at my swatch cards. They appear to be quite different from visvamitra's swatches. Magenta may be a candidate of recipe change during the last 10 years.

One life!
