White balance is off. Try using a grey card to measure your exposure from. Gives a whiter background or gets you closer to it.

...hmmm, thanks. but on my screen it looks perfectly light gray - what it should be. this was a quick shot, I will try another pc.

ps: exposure setting has no influence on white balance, when you're photographing in manual mode as I do....

Kidde: how is the new iteration compared to the previous?

Sorry for taking so long, I think the nibs are nearly identical. The girth is very different but weight is close. The older one is thinner with a metal cap. They are both M and are some of the smoothest writers I've found out of the box. I have no clue how a Safari gets as many recommendations as it does (I have an AlStar) while Pelikanos are ignored. You'd think using international carts and converters would at least get them mentioned.

For new pens at this price point, using only my two as reference, I'd have to say they are great pens and a wonderful value.

Thanks! I love the previous model as the ergonomics fits my hand pretty well. I guess the difference with the Safari is that the Safari can be considered as something else than a school pen designwise (at least west of Atlantics). I am not sure this can be said about the Pelikano. I have both and love the Safari, but I wouldn't use it for anything else than short notes or editing.

I love the Pelikano and the cheaper Grand Prix with the same nib and feed is a ready made pen for ED use:

Didn't know about the Grand Prix. The nib is really surprisingly good, a little springy just like I love it. I am not so sure about the ED conversion: the feed does have a hard time keeping with the ink flow and I have to keep the pen nearly full most of the time.

My daughter got one for free at the Michigan Pen Show. It was a used one, but hey, free is free. She cleaned it out good and I fired it up tonight. I can't believe how awesome it is. Seriously.

As mentioned in the topic title, Love those Pelikanos! That cigar box appears to have been a treasure chest! Your posts have convinced me that a nice condition Pelikan, from the 60's or 70's is now definitely on my must have list. Any things you suggest to watch out for or avoid when evaluating such a pen from pictures?

Many moon ago, back in Switzerland we used Geha Schulfuller, They were black bomber, piston filler, and a common school pen. Then early 60ties, Pelikano came out. It was BLUE slender and a cartridge filler, and all the cool kids had them. Well eventually I talked my Dad into getting me one. Other than that I don't really remember it, My things didn't last long very long due to a curiosity about what was inside. We had classes like "penmanship" Now I wish I had paid more attention.

I saw the introduction of the Pelikano in a series of ads from 1960. The pen was in a holder with a flip up pen stand.

I now have that Pelikano and case. I needed it ! ! am watching the mail for the the matching ball point that went with it.

I also have the Pelikano that was introduced in these ads in 1965:

I don't know what the value of the Pelikano is to collectors, but I like the matching of a slice of time. I also have a few samples of different early generations. I sent my granddaughter a new school Pelikano for 6th grade in Geneva, but the school had a deal with another manufacturer. Well it is the Swiss section!

Here is another example of a slice, but not the Pelikano … Pelikan's introduction of its first ball point called 'The Roller':
