Poussiere De Lune - J. Herbin

Does anyone know when it was reformulated as I'm not sure which version I have?

Take a piece of paper and write on it with your version of PDL. Let dry for a few minutes and then drop it in water for a 30 minute soak. If the ink has for the most part, floated off the paper, you have the new version. If the writing has spread out on the paper but still very visible after the soak, you have the old formula.

Also check the paper for feathering. The old formula seemed to feather quite a bit more than the new formula, especially on cheap paper.

Big thanks! What a great test.

Thank you for this reply. I will try it out tomorrow

I tested 2 versions of PDL today. One version I wrote on Thursday in a shop, and my version that I have at home.

My version was a lighter, more reddish than purple shade. My version floated off the paper and the deeper and bolder, more purply one, that I wrote in the shop, stayed on the paper.

So the results seem to cause conflicting information between the original post and the 'way to find out what version you have' post as I expected the lighter, more dusty version to be the older one

I do like their colors and their flow parameters , but I do hate their unpractical and too small bottles

When I would find biggerr bottles , I would definitely change to Herbin for sure

Funny, the bottle was the first thing, years ago, I loved about Herbin ink. Such a vintage design, with the pen rest. Love the little motif in the ink color, and the slightly crude, cartoonish design. But it doesn't bother me as I have standardized on filling all pens with a syringe. So narrow bottle openings aren't a bother. In fact, I like the Herbin bottle in preference to the smaller Diamine and Noodlers, because I fear tipping over a tall versus squat bottle. If anyone would have that accident, it would be me, the Klutz.

I agree with gwynedd - as a sometimes clumsy person, I prefer the shorter bottle because it is less dangerous, lol.

And I always thought the Herbin bottles were pretty (even before I was into fp's and I saw them at the art store).

Although I really like Diamine's big bottles too - the lines are pretty :)

I have the old color. It is very resistant to water and it's definitely not as plum colored as the new one looks. I like it. Sad it's no more, but I'm sure I'll find a similar greyed purple when I run out.

I wish they sold this in 100 ml bottles! Amazon does have 30 ml bottles for about $11, PRIME. I'm expecting a bottle today, in fact :D

I just checked I SELL PENS & found they do indeed have this in the 100ml bottles. It is listed "in stock" while their 30ml bottle os PdL is "out of stock." (Usual disclaimers/just enjoy "finding things" & have found ISP to sometimes have things others do not. The color change is mentioned in a review of PdL @ Goulet Pens dated May, 2013 so I would imagine most of the earlier color is replaced by the current sample shown in this review)

Thank you Barkingpig; I already got my 30 ml bottle, but I will check this "I SELL PENS" place next time I re-up (and might check it out in general).

I used to really love PDL. It was the duskier quality about it that I especially liked. I recently bought some more and realised that it wasn't quite the same. It's much more purple now. It's not unpleasant and I will use it, but it isn't what I fell in love with. The other ink I used to have that was almost identical to the original formula was Caran D'Ache - Storm. But they 'revamped' their range a while ago, so I don't think it's even available anymore. Such is life! Must give Scabiosa a try at some point - I think it might be up my street. I use Pasternak quite a lot, but it can be a bit of a bugger, clogging up a pen if I leave it in there for a few days. But it's all worth it for that dusky purpley hue.

Definitely try Scabiosa! But be aware that it looks very different on different papers, from light lilac gray to purple to almost black.

I have the older version, and like it. Its a dusty violet purple, but quiet likeable. Just used a bit for a fill. I like how its varies from more grayish to more purplish color.

I ordered a bottle of this 'Moon Dust' based on this review...which was the first time & place I noticed it. So first off, good on ye for that.

THEN...I got to thinking about some great sketching journal pages I'd pinned with the Pinterest app...cursive text writing mixed with classic pen drawings of fish and related fauna...kind of a natural history field journal thing. I thought this purple would be a perfect foil for another recent ink find...Diamine 150th Anniversary - Safari. I thought the two colors seemed made for each other...the purple for the fish drawings and the Safari for the text. I've dedicated a hoarded Rhodia dot web book to the project.

See how posting an ink review can get ALL of us going. Nice!

Hopefully the links below will take you to two examples of the journal pages I pinned from Flikr.
