Posting The Cap On A Heritage 1912 Is A Bad Idea

I post the cap on all my fountain pens.

This morning I cracked the cap of my Heritage 1912 after posting it.

I called the MB Service Centre in Hamburg and mailed it off.

Feeling a little sad.

Sorry to hear that Meiers. A painful lesson, and a crack made just by posting is....a shame.

Fingers crossed you will get your nice shiny pen back soon :)

EEK! I'm surprised to hear that. I typically don't post my pens (Nakaya, Danitrio - can't really post those anyway), but I'm still surprised that the cap cracked. Hope your pen returns quickly.

Sorry to hear that, you do know it wasn't meant to be posted though? I never ever post my pens as I don't like the weight and I dislike scratching the barrel due to the threads..But that's just me.

My vitage treasures are Parker Duofolds. Rubber gets dry and brittle ;when old. ninety years is plenty of time

to develop flaws in the cap. I won't risk jamming a pen barrel into it. As a matter of safe habit, I don't post the

cap --- ever.

Thank you, meiers, for sharing your pain. I hope it saves many others.

As stated in many previous posts I have been posting my MB caps for decades without ever having seen the microscratches (under a research microscope) reported by others. If a pen wasn't designed to be posted I don't have it. In fact, I purchased a Heritage 1912 after having seen it advertised in a posted position. I was shocked to open the package and find that there is a metal safety pin on the inside of the cap that PREVENTS it from being posted. It is a very small pen and would only grow into something balanced and presentable when posted. Fortunately, I was able to immediately return it to the AD for a full refund. Very lucky. Other forums have acknowledged that this model pen cannot be posted due the metal safety pin and that the advertising photo showing it posted was staged. So, I am curious to know how the cap was posted in order to crack the lip when it won't fit on the barrel.

Oh yes, the cap can be posted. The pin on the inside of the cap doesn't interfere at all.

The nice people at the Montblanc boutique told me not to post the cap but I have a hard time followig directions.

Ouch!

Good luck with the repair.

As we have talked about it before. I cannot post the heritage at all because the circumference of the cap is smaller than the end of the pistonknob.

I would not say this. It's small when is capped... but uncapped is as long as a 149 (as the nib is smaller, really the Heritage body is longer than 149 body). Here compared with all Meisterstuck 14X saga.

I love the Heritage 1912 - I have and use it every single day.

I cannot stand that MB shows it posted in it online advertisements and the consumer is left to learn that the pen cannot be posted without risk and, in fact, is not meant to be posted. It is deceptive of MB to advertise the pen in this manner.

I'm sorry you've had this problem. I don't think MB should be surprised when others have the same situation.

And I'm sorry that the non-posting issue would keep someone away from such a otherwise wonderful pen. I wouldn't have gotten the pen if I knew it couldn't be posted - and I would have missed out on an amazing writing instrument.

I agree. Nice lineup! However, this comparison is between an unposted Heritage 1912 and an unposted 146 and 149. I would never use either the 146 or the 149 in the configuration as shown because they are also too small and unbalanced. The correct comparison would be between an uncapped Heritage 1912 (which cannot be posted) and a posted 149 (which was designed to be posted).

The Heritage 1912 unit that I purchased and returned could not be posted. The cap would sort of sit on the top but could not be safely posted. The staff at the AD were as surprised as I was and opened another unit to see if the one I had was defective in some way. The second unit was the exactly the same as the first. It can only be used as a small unbalanced unposted pen. I have tested different Heritage 1912s on several occasions and would agree that it is an amazing writer. But the appearance of the nib cannot be compared with either a 146 or 149. It is small and out of proportion to an already small pen. It might as well have been borrowed from a stainless steel nib you can get on a disposable pen from the dollar store. In contrast, the cap is AMAZING. Now if only the cap were mated with a nicely designed barrel and nib combination! Of course, this is just my very personal opinion on the aesthetics of the pen.

I guess it is a matter of personal preference, I do happen to like using all pens unposted, dislike the heavy top sensation by posting a pen. The heritage nib is quite amazingly springy, but yes, it is very tiny.. Would have liked it to have been bigger.

Sorry to hear. I hope a replacement arrives soon!

I do have a 146 since 1981 which I post almost always,

fortunately it's still okay...

Thanks. I post all my Meisterstück pens. And yes, I have never been gentle or particularly careful with them. However, in thirty years this one is the first Montblanc pen I damaged badly enough to require service. Edited by meiers

In spite of what others say, I wax my pens, and never get mars. I normally post all my pens.

I'm glad to learn, MB is a good posting pen, in Large.

My other two MB's are standard length.
