A more expensive Montblanc made of resin would likely shatter from a drop like that.

Based on?

I've had both a 149 and a 146 survive falls of similar heights.

The joint between the section and the barrel is a weak point on these pens. There have been a number of reports (search repair Q&A) on this (I myself have had a pen break this way). The good news is that if Pelikan won't replace it, it can be repaired (again search repairs).

Metal pens and shag carpet? Do I need to get out my platform disco shoes and fly away collar?

If you do, please post pictures of throwing yourself on the floor and seeing what breaks. Seriously, I think that Mark Train's post above has turned the discussion. I followed the thread he mentioned and hope that others do as well.

I happen to prefer metal pens, and I remember shag carpeting, 8-track tapes, and appliances in shades of sunset orange, avocado green, and harvest gold.

This is what I was speculating too. The clean break to me suggests that it was already a pre-existing weak point.

Yeah that makes sense, also it's right where the cap screws are, which I guess could act as a bit of a driver around that weak joint.

MarkTrain is there a glue you'd recommend? Would ordinary super glue work or is that just stupid?

...speaking of, is anyone in the market for a used blue M600?

Right or wrong, seems like they missed a chance to score some good PR points and lock up a customer for life. Kind of a shortsighted approach to take, IMO.

I believe the preferred way to do is with epoxy. You can do it yourself or you can see if a repairmen, such as Ron Zorn, can do it.
