Solid 18Ct Gold Parker 51 Pen/pencil Set

Hi,

I'm am new to this forum but have been a regular follower with help to my small collection.

 

I've just added to it today with the purchase of the 18ct Parker 51 pen/pencil set. After purchasing it, I took it to a pen expert who informed me that the pen looks exactly like a 51, with an authentic 51 nib/filler/ all plastic parts.

 

One of the reasons I thought about before buying the set is that it didnt make since for it to be faked. The gold scrap would be about £300, and the costs to manufacture a one off gold fake would outnumber the cost that I paid for the pen.

 

However, he informed me that the pen does not have the feathered arrow on the clip, this got me a bit worried that I would not get my money back.

 

This got me worried that it could be a fake, hence I posted here. I would appreciate it if anyone could authentic this set.

 

I must also note that the Clio is hall marked for 18ct gold, and there is also a mrk for E.M?

I think that is an aftermarket solid gold overlay on top of a black 51.

 

My reasoning for this is: the clip is not Parker and there is no jewel, the cap lip should have "PARKER" on it and you can see the black barrel peaking out underneath the gold, whereas the Presidential had a solid gold barrel. Also, the filler strikes me as off. I don't believe the open hoop filler was used on the 18ct gold Presidential.

 

Parker Newhaven did produce an 18ct gold Presidential with a barleycorn pattern, but it was slightly different from that. The pen would also have had assaying hallmarks.

 

It still is a very lovely pen and was probably quite expensive to make during its day.

Custom pens are very hard to gauge a 'value' for. But least you know how much the gold value is. (the normal sets appear to be around 90$ USD to 160$ USD depending on color/quality etc).

 

Essentially they're worth what someone will pay for them.

Thanks for your advice, I guess I should hope that there will be a very wealthy gold pen collector in the market for some 51's at the time when I will pass these on.

You could always price them above the value of the gold itself, and see if there's any bites. I've noticed a number of sets on eBay being listed at around $700-800 USD, but since I know very little about P51s I am not sure if they're rare, or just someone thinking they'll actually get that much for them.

A few professional dealers offer appraisals so you could try emailing them and asking their opinion on the matter.
