Sorry, Max Dog, but the Verve nibs are Pilot/Namiki.

D.ick

I stand corrected. It's the new Cross Peerless 125 then that has the Sailor nibs.

tell you what if you come up with a nice refinement of something, I'll slightly modify your design so that if some random person were in a store with no knowledge they might buy mine thinking it's yours, since mine will be lower priced and look close enough they don't know which is which. thanks for doing all the work for me.

+1. Nicely put.

I don't like plastic pens in general as I like heft. I would go for a 146 Solitaire or a M900 Toledo.

I have both. Like both.

Both are alway inked and ready for use.

My 146 is a mid-1990s, the M800 (an M805 actually) is recent. It delivers the ink! Fantastic nib.

Both are very cozy, both have great pistons and both have great nibs and are reliable writers.

Both are a very similar size (close also to the PFM)

It would be hard to choose but the 146 just feels so good in the hand. So MB by a hair. Which is weird because my whole life I have liked and used and coveted Pelikan pens (I have had 4 vintage Pelikans) and have avoided the MB stink. But I'll shout it to the rooftops: I love my 146. Love. I would NEVER have predicted that. I still feel weird owning the thing but I have had it a 8 months or so and it is a truly great pen.

(I do not own but also like the MB 149. I do have an M1000 and dislike it. </minority opinion> )

I dont like the design of the Montblanc at all, while the M800 is a gorgeous pen. Easy choice. ;)

Montblancs are like Mercedes. M1000+800 Pelikans are like Lexus. Design vs. performance. I just bought a new 146 - horrible. Went to the MB stroes and asked for another one. Same thing. Terrible writer. Got my money back and with it ordered 4 more 805 Pelikans! The 149 however is an eceptional pen, probably the only one. A cheap M200 Pelikan outperforms a 146. the 144 doesn't even try!
Not to mention inks. Edelstein is probably the best ink ever! Thick, super easy to flow. Since I don't really collect pens but like to write with them, I could care less about the looks. sure, the Mb is slick but so is a Mercedes ...

Can I ask more experienced users for a suggestion? Which Italian and Japanese pens are of the same caliber of the Pelikan? up to 750 euros. Thanks in advance!

Visconti seems popular these days as are Delta and Stipula but If i was looking to get a spendy Italian pen I would look primarily at the Aurora and Omas offerings like the Omas Paragon, Milord, or the Aurora 88 Large. Less gaudy, less gimmicky, more classic pens with excellent nibs, so somewhat like the Pelikan you like.

Comparisons are dangerous.... I would not know about those car brands...

Personally I own but 1 MB, a WE (Cervantes). It's a heavy beast, I think it is beautiful, and it is a very good writer.

I have tried a 149 a few times, but it is not for me. Too light. And -beauty is in the eye of the beholder- I don't like it visually.

Italian Omas has some stunners, but they are way too light for me, and the ones with some heft have metal sections.

I have several Visconti, but am not fond of the Palladium nib.

I have a few Aurora, 1 Delta. Not bad. Just for a good writer have a look at Montegrappa Linea Nero.

But, for that money, why not visit Belgium and Conid, with our own Fauntainbel's Bulkfillers. If you want to Francis can grind you a nib to your liking, at a plus, of course.

I think they are sleek, extremely innovative, hold about 2 weeks supply of ink and are terrific writers.

Very kind of you and thanks very much indeed! I visited the Aurora website and found some pens which I had seen elsewhere before - the 88's. i especially like the two tone pens black and gold/silver.

Thans very much indeed.

The manufacturer that you refer to in Belgium is this?

http://www.conidpen.com/

Are you actually familiar with the Pelikan 800 series? If so these Conid's compared favourably well?

Yep that's the one. Contact Werner, the owner of Conid. Alternatively you could contact our member Fountainbel, who can send you the right information.

I would certainly prefer the Conid over the Pel800. I own both.

There are several topics on these models in our forum: The Mall...

One reason why comparisons can be dangerous is that subjective feel does not always match objective measures.

Montblanc 149: weight, 30.25, grams; posted length, 166 mm; max barrel diameter, 15.1 mm (source: pendata).

Conid Bulkfiller Kingsize: weight, 29.5 grams, posted length, 172.5 mm; max barrel diameter, 17.6 mm
Conid Bulkfiller Regular: weight, 27 grams; posted length, 165 mm; max barrel diameter, 15.0 mm (source: Conid website).

@prf5:

The main problem I have when ordering online is the relative size, relative to my references. Absolute size (such as those you've supplied) are less important. For instance, I don't have any issues with the lenght of the 149. But I find it too wide to write with for hours on end. As I do with the Pelikan M1000. The Conids are not perfectly cylindrical. Neither is the 149.

From the two pictures in the Conid site, they (Kingsize and Regular) seem to be easy to hold for a long time due to the shape of the lower section, which isn't the case in the 149. But given the uniqueness (and price) of the Conid, I will have to visit them before comitting as I want to make sure I can handle one such pen for hours on end. The model I like costs close to 900 euros! Too much to put it inside a collector's case. I don't collect pens. I use them! A lot! I fill the M805 three to four times a week! Best wishes!

My Conid is even lighter, 24.5 grams. But much narrower, 12-12.5 mm. That 24 grams is about the one negative thing I could say about that pen.

For such a fat pen, the 149 is too light for me. Same with the Conway Stewart Churchill. I just love CS, but the Churchill was just too light for the size.

my remark about comparisons was aimed at comparing each pen to a certain car brand...
